LT Fault Level Calculation

This document provides information about the fault level calculations for 3 x 2000 KVA, 415V MTU diesel generator sets with Leroy Sommer alternators. It calculates the short circuit current of 21 KA for each generator set and a total fault level of 15.09 MVA. It then evaluates the thermal stability of the bus bars, calculating a temperature rise of 0.17 deg C per second, ensuring the bus bars can withstand the maximum current of 9.77KA from the generator sets running in parallel.

Fault Level
A fault level is a stage in an electrical system where the equipment looses all
type of stability. This calculation is very important when the equipment is
connected to the grid which has infinite bus.
For DG set which is connected with grid, and is required to run in parallel, this
calculation and accordingly all protections are must.
Normally fault level is calculated as under
FL =3 x V X Isc/1000
FL = (1.73 x 415 x 21)/ 1000
FL = 15.09 MVA
The normal representation of fault level is measured in MVA and short circuit in
KA.
Short Circuit Current
For AC Symmetrical generator
Isc =Rated Current /X d (transient reactance)
In our case Isc =2756/0.101
=20.12 KA say 21 KA X 3 DG sets =63 kA
When a generator is not connected with the grid then the perception of fault level
becomes different .for a genset captive power plant we basically calculate the
flwg.

The max power the prime mover can generate is the total fuel stop power which
is =1.17xtotal rated power (Kva)
=1.17x6000
=7020 KVA
As such IMAX =KVA max / 3xV
=7020 /3 X415
=9.77Ka
Isc of generator is 21 KA.this means that the individual generator can withstand
system max current.
As per IEC34 the max. Current capacity of alternator is only 3 times the rated
current for 3 seconds, in our case it is 3X2756=8268 Amps which is less than
IMAX and therefore the alternator is safe.
The breaker will have min 50 KA Fault level.
Here we have considered peak short circuit current which is =2 X Isc X
Short circuit ratio i.e =2 X 21 X 0.417=12.38 Ka
However in such system the thermal stability of bus bars is a must.
Copper development Association of UK has devised a formula, which is in
existence till date and is defined as under;
Temp rise in degree centigrade per second =1.25(I/A) 2 X 10-8
Where I is in Amps ,A is in Sq Inch.
In our case I is considered as Imax which is 9770 Amps ,and A(area of busbar)
= 5X200X10 /25.4 X25.4=15 Sq inch.
The temp rise per second as per above formula is 0.17 deg. C which is
negligible. Therefore thermal stability of bus bars is also ensured.
