Salinization Lab Report Format

This document outlines the sections and requirements for an APES Salinization Lab Report. The sections are: Title, Purpose, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Raw Data, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. The Title must include the test subject, variable, and measurement. The Purpose answers why the lab is being done. The Hypothesis is a testable statement. The Materials list equipment. The Procedure provides step-by-step instructions. The Raw Data records observations. The Results include a written description and two graphs of the data. The Discussion interprets the data, analyzes controls, and considers sources of error. The Conclusion summarizes lessons learned and offers suggestions to prevent salinization for farmers.

APES Salinization Lab Report (50 points)

Clearly label each section

Title:
Title The title must include the test subject, the variable, and what is being measured. (1 point)
Purpose:
Purpose

The purpose is a short description of the problem being investigated. It should

answer the question Why am I doing this lab? (2 points)

Hypothesis:
Hypothesis

The hypothesis is a specific question that will be tested. It is framed as a testable

statement. (2 points)

Materials:
Materials A list of inventory of equipment used. An illustration can be used in addition to
the inventory list. (2 points)
Procedure:
Procedure The procedure is a step by step description of the experimental set up. A person
should be able to read this section and perform your experiment exactly the way
you did. Please write in outline form. (4 points)
Raw Data:
Data The raw data is an objective written record of observations made during the lab.
The raw data are your actual original observations of the lab and is never recopied.
Do not worry if it is messy. Include your daily observations and the calculation
worksheet. (5 points)
Results:
Results

The results include two components: a written component and a visual

component. The written component is simply a description of the raw data. You
must complete two graphs for the visual component. One graph of your last days
data with % germination on the y-axis and % salt on the x-axis. The other graph is
up to you, but it must be based on your observations about salt and germination
and provide insight into your suggestions for the farmers. (10 points)

Discussion:
Discussion The discussion is an interpretation and explanation of the data. Explain your
graphs, analyze your positive and negative controls, and provide details about
what happened in each Petri dish. Explain how your data supports or rejects your
hypothesis. The discussion also includes possible sources of error. Explain how/if
you took evaporation into consideration. (12 points)
Conclusion:
Conclusion The conclusion is a summary of what you learned from the experiment including
the significance of salinization on agriculture and suggestions to the farmer about
how to prevent salinizaton. Bring in outside information (including a reference) for
remediation of salinization. Please include suggestions for how the experiment

could have been done better if you were to do it another time. I will be looking for
a great answer for the farmers. (12 points)
