Lecture 2 - Rankine Cycles - Solved Examples

This lecture discusses improving the thermal efficiency of vapor power plants through regenerative feedwater heating. Regeneration involves preheating the feedwater entering the boiler using heat recovered from the exhaust steam. This raises the average temperature of heat addition in the boiler, increasing thermal efficiency. Open feedwater heaters are used to recover heat from exhaust steam by bringing it into contact with incoming feedwater, allowing heat to be transferred from one to the other without mixing. Multiple heaters in series can be used to further preheat the feedwater in stages, boosting efficiency. Regenerative feedwater heating is a commonly employed method to enhance the performance of vapor power cycles.

Lecture 2: Improving
Performance - Regenerative
Vapor Power Cycle
Regeneration
Another commonly used method for increasing the thermal efficiency of
vapor power plants is regenerative feedwater heating, or simply
regeneration. This is the subject of the present section.
To introduce the principle underlying regenerative feedwater heating,
consider Fig. 8.3 once again. In cycle 1234a1, the working fluid enters
the boiler as a compressed liquid at state 4 and is heated while in the liquid
phase to state a. With regenerative feedwater heating, the working fluid
enters the boiler at a state between 4 and a. As a result, the average
temperature of heat addition is increased, thereby tending to increase the
thermal efficiency.
