Uganda Christian University: Faculty of Science and Technology

This document discusses the development of an online examination system for Uganda Christian University. It notes that the current manual system is time-consuming and prone to errors. The proposed online system would allow for multiple choice exams to be administered regularly and would provide immediate results, saving faculty time. It would include various courses and subjects. The system aims to provide a quick and easy way for students to take exams. It would automatically calculate total marks and allow a time limit to be set for questions. This would address current challenges like students falsely claiming to have taken exams or human errors in marking and calculating marks.

ABSTRACT
Online Examination System forms the lifeline of the Educational Institutes to the functioning
of the Examination. It is very essential for an Institute to handle the Examinations and their
results. It is very useful for an Institute to test its student continuously for their mutual
development. This system is helpful for conducting (M.C) Multiple Choice Examinations
which can be conducted regularly as well as for surprise tests and provides immediate results
saving the precious time of faculties to check the papers and prepare mark sheets. The IT
initiatives have encouraged various Organizations to develop systems to facilitate their day to
day operations. The Online Examination System will include various Courses (IT,
Commerce, Science, etc.) and subjects for conducting examinations. This system helps in
conducting examinations quickly and can thus help in saving time and the operations will be
carried out efficiently. With the effective use, any Institute can apply the Online
Examination System for conducting quick examinations and getting better results in less
time.
Problem Statement

The current existing system which is used to conduct examinations in many academic
institutions across Uganda, Uganda Christian University inclusive is manual entry.
Online Examination is very helpful to users. The aim of this project is to provide quick,
immediate and easy way to appear the exam. It can provide special advantages to the
students/applicants. The online examination system can automatically add the marks
allocated in each question to determine the total mark for the questions. A time limit can be
set for the questions.
There is a current challenge where by some students start claiming for marks in the tests that
they did not sit for. This arises when they connive with their friends to write down their
names to show that they sat for the exams yet they did not. This becomes very tricky for the
lecturer to determine whether this person truly sat for the exams. Other challenges of the
current system are as follows
Time Consuming when creating question paper
Time taken to mark the answer scripts
Calculation of Marks
Human error
Requires teachers/lecturers to monitor exam centres
Resources are wasted like paper in order to print the question papers and students also have

to have answer booklets.
