Lab 8.1.

2: Basic Disk to Dynamic Disk Conversion


Estimated time: 20 Minutes
Objective
Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to convert you hard drive from a basic disk
to a dynamic disk.
Equipment
You will need the following items in order to complete this lab:

A PC with windows 2000 professional installed

Scenario
You want to set up RAID 0 on the new server you just purchased for your home. You are
running windows 2000 pro as your operating system. You have a 20 GIG hard drive and
you are planning to purchase another one to set up RAID 0.
Procedures
In this lab, you will convert your hard drive from a basic disk to dynamic disk this will
enable you to configure RAID 0 striping on your pc.
Step 1
Right-click on My Computer and click Manage
What window opens up when you click Manage?

Step 2
In the left windowpane click Storage. In the right windowpane double click the Disk
Management (local) snap in.
How many disks do you have on your computer? _____________________________
How many partitions and what are they named? ______________________________
What other devices appear in the window? __________________________________
Step 3
Right-click on your local disk (Disk 0) and click Upgrade to Dynamic Disk. In the window
Upgrade to Dynamic Disk, put a check in the box next to Disk 0, if there is not already
one and click OK.
Step 4
In the window Disk to Upgrade verify that it is Disk 0 and where it says Will Upgrade
there is a Yes underneath it.

Step 5
In the same window click Details in the lower left corner. What does it say?

Do you have any volumes contained on Disk 0?

Step 6
Click OK and you will be back to the Disk to Upgrade window. Now click Upgrade. A
warning window will appear asking you if you are sure, click Yes. Now the last warning
window will appear read it and click Yes also.
Step 7
A window will appear saying a reboot will take place to finish, click OK.
Step 8
Once the computer reboots it will say Windows 2000 has finished installing new devices.
You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Click Yes.
Step 9
Right-click My Computer and click Manage. Click Storage and then Disk Management
(local).
Did it convert too dynamic disk? __________________________________________
Troubleshooting
Click Action in the upper left corner and click Restore Basic Disk Configuration. A
warning will appear click Yes.
Can you convert back to Basic Disk without losing any information? Why?
