THANKSGIVING FOOTBALL GAME
In first grade this month we have
been working on many interesting
topics. I have outlined the highlights
for you below.
Whats new this month?
We celebrated Thanksgiving in
November through lots of crafts,
turkeys and cornucopia with an allschool. For December we are
discussing giving and those less
fortunate in preparation for Christmas
at the end of the month. This relates
to the community service unit we are
working on in class currently.

Social Studies
Our current inquiry unit is titled
Public places serve the needs of the
community we will be focusing on
our community and places that help
us in our life.
At this time of year, we find many
cultural activities to engage the
students in an American experience
through the holidays. We learn lots of
specialized vocabulary as well as the
traditions of the Western world.
Students have a great time working
on these themes and using, reading,
writing and math to solidify their
knowledge and improve their
speaking ability in the classroom.
Literacy
Math and Science
In literacy we have been working on
complicated longer vowel sounds with
combined vowels. We are working
hard on writing workshop. Our
students have been able to write 5-7
sentences in about 15 minutes. As
they improve their proficiency we are
honing in on grammar. These
practices have continued to have a
positive effect on our learners and
help them expand their writing
practice in and out of the classroom.
In addition, twice a week our students
In math class weve been studying
shapes and angles as well as their
other attributes. We have been
working as a whole group on the rug
with dry erase boards to ensure
students learning. In science we
have begun a unit of liquids and
solids. The students had great fun
identifying the different elements of
each state. We created Oobleck after
reading the story by Dr. Seuss and
discussed its ability to be both a liquid
and a solid. Some of the homework
will deal with these themes as well.
Special Projects
Community
Students have been steadily
improving in listening to directions
and taking care of their class and
themselves. As the year progresses,
their sense of ownership in the
classroom is palpable. They selfregulate and are motivated to
ensure that all items are stored
properly and maintained. This is a
wonderful lesson that then trickles
down into their work and helps them
to work more carefully.
