1. OBJECT
To design a simple longitudinal autostabiliser for an aircraft using the pole placement method.
To investigate the basic response properties of the "closed loop" aircraft.
2. THE AIRCRAFT MODEL
An advanced combat aircraft with relaxed static stability flying at 157kts at sea level has the
following state description,

3. PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS
Obtain the "open loop" transfer functions of the aircraft and determine its stability
characteristics.
4. STABILITY AUGMENTATION
Use the pole placement method to design a feed back matrix K to give the following modes
characteristics,
Insert the feedback gains in the appropriate boxes in the following block diagram of the flight
control system. Pay particular attention to the signs of the gains.

Calculate [A-BK] and hence obtain the "closed loop" transfer functions for the augmented
aircraft. Obtain some response time histories to indicate the modes characteristics.
5. REDUCED ORDER MODEL
Solve the "closed loop" reduced order model equations of motion and obtain the following
transfer functions,

6. TIME RESPONSES
Obtain the following step responses;
(i) q in response to . Vary T 2 about the actual value, plot all responses on the same
axes.
(ii) in response to and in response to on the same axes. Observe the incidence
lag.
(iii) az in response to and compare with the responses obtained in 6(i).
