Strand(s): Measurement - Perimeter

Key Concepts and Skills (based on curriculum expectations)

estimate, measure, and record perimeter using non-standard units and standard units;
compare, describe, and order objects, using attributes measured in non-standard units and
standard units.
Evidence of Student Learning
Students can use their understanding of perimeter to measure to different shapes (a pond and
forest) on grid paper and compare them to decide which would require more lengths of fencing
to enclose.

Lessons

Instructional Task(s)
Dog Yards: Whos Got the
Biggest Yard?

-estimate and count the tiles

needed to calculate the
perimeter in cubes
Antwalks:
-they are given 6
pattern blocks (2 red, 2 blue, 2
yellow per pair)
-they have to create shapes
around which an ant could walk
-after they make it, they need to
find the perimeter
Measuring Perimeter with Cubes
- estimate and measure
perimeter of teacher made
shapes as a group using cubes
- record findings and order shape
perimeters from least to greatest
Measuring Distance Around
- students use a ruler to measure
the distance around a variety of
shapes
- create their own shapes to
measure

Grid Paper Challenge

- create a shape (on grid paper)
that has a set perimeter (i.e., 20
cm)
-how can we change the shape
and still have the same
perimeter?

Assessment/Evalu
ation

Resources

- are students able to

estimate, calculate
and compare the 3
different shapes (dog
yards)

Racing Around by
Stewart Murphy

- are students able to

measure around their
shape
- can they create and
compare different
perimeters created
with the same blocks

- how close are the

estimates
- can they order
perimeters

- cubes
- ready made shapes
- work sheet to record
results

- can students
accurately measure
the perimeter
- how do they keep
track of their
measurements
- do they properly use
units
- are students able to
create a shape with a
specific perimeter

Final Assessment
Part 1: Nature Walk
- measuring and comparing two
areas to determine which is
larger
Part 2: Measurement
- estimating and measuring the
perimeter of a variety of
rectangles using a ruler

- can they accurately

estimate, measure,
compare and order
the perimeter of
objects using
standard and nonstandard units

- assessment paper
- ruler, cm cubes
- pencil
