APT Analyzing Portrayals of Teaching

Purpose

Identify patterns in how teachers are portrayed in literature and film

Connect these patterns to what society assumes/values about teachers/teaching

Big Questions: How are teachers portrayed in literature and film? What does this
suggest about how society views this profession?

Process

(note: these steps are guidelines for process, not product: your final version should draw on your
reading responses and Literature Circles)

Part 1
1. During the second part of our course, you will choose and respond on a weekly basis to a text (novel,
biography, or film) which provides a portrayal of teacher(s) In this response, you should
a. Use evidence from the text (specific moments/direct quotes)
b. Address the Big Questions of this assignment
i. How does the text portray the teacher(s)? Consider elements like
1. Appearance,
2. Dialogue,
3. Action,
4. Point of View,
5. Treatment by others,
6. How the character changes over the course of the story
ii. What does this portrayal suggest about societys assumptions/values toward this
profession?

Part 2
After reading and responding to four texts of your choice (and practicing the analysis of different kinds of
text/portrayals in class), you will compare portrayals of teaching you have read. Your comparison should
1. Use evidence (specific moments/direct quotes) from at least two of the texts you have chosen and at
least one of the texts we read together as class
2. Identify similarities and differences
3. Explain why these similarities and differences are important (NOTE: it is not enough to point out a
pattern here; you must also interpret what it means)
4. Organize to make a clear argument (consider the following options):
a. A then B then C (address each portrayal separately, connect to each of the others
b. Sims + Explanations, Diffs + Explanations (Compare all 3, then contrast all 3)
c. A1, B1, C1 then A2, B2, C2 etc. (Present each theme that applies to all 3)
