MSE 160 Problem Set #3

This document contains a chemistry problem set with 4 questions. Question 1 asks about 3 isomers of N2CO and their Lewis structures, formal charges, and most stable isomer. Question 2 asks about the shapes and polarity of 6 molecules/ions using VSEPR theory. Question 3 asks whether certain vibrations would be active or inactive in the infrared spectrum. Question 4 asks to calculate the force constant for the Li2 molecule given its infrared wavelength. Additional practice problems are suggested.

Problem Set #3
1. Three isomers having the formula N2CO are known: ONCN (nitrosyl cyanide), ONNC (nitorsyl
isocyanide) and NOCN (isonitrosyl cyanide). Draw the best Lewis structure for each and
determine the formal charges. Which isomer do you predict to be the most stable?

2. Use VSEPR theory to predict the shapes of the molecules/ions below. For each one, provide a
sketch of the molecular shape including bond angles and state whether it is polar or non-polar.
(a) SbCl3

(b) IF5

(c) AsH3

(d) BrF2-

(e) OF2

(f) ClF3

3. Indicate whether the following vibrations will be active or inactive in the infrared spectrum.
See diagram for part (d).

4. The Li2 molecule (7Li isotope) shows a very weak infrared line in its vibrational spectrum at a
wavelength of 2.85 x 10-5 m. Calculate the force constant for the Li2 molecule.
Additional suggested problems from Jespersen (answers in Appendix B available on
Blackboard or in the e-text): 8.95, 8.97, 8.101, 8.105, 8.115, 9.73, 9.75, 9.79, 9.85
