Course Description
We will be using interesting problems to learn problem solving techniques as well as topics in algebra,
focusing on the concept of functions. We will look at different ways to approach unfamiliar problems,
including modeling, simplifying, looking for patterns, creating tables, creating graphs, creating charts,
looking at different possibilities and organizing data. We will focus the problems on generalizing and
finding relationships and patterns.
Fall: We will start the trimester looking at different types of functions, starting with familiar relationships:
linear, quadratic and exponential. We will then move into exploring sequences and series, including
Arithmetic Sequences and Series, Geometric Sequences and Series and the Fibonacci Sequence. We will
end the semester by exploring the relationship between exponential and logarithmic functions. For all
functions, we will continue to learn different ways of representing functions, such as graphing, writing an
equation in function notation, making a table and describing in words.
Winter: We will continue our work from the first trimester working with different functions. We will
explore polynomial functions, periodic functions (with a focus on trigonometric functions) and learn how
to work with irrational and complex numbers.
Spring: We will finish our study of functions, including looking more deeply at trigonometric functions
and non-polynomial functions. We will also spend a significant amount of time preparing for the
Mathematics Graduation Portfolio. In order to move on to 12th grade, all students must present their
Mathematics Graduation Portfolio.
Common Core Standards
N-RN, A-SSE, A-REI, F-IF, F-BF, F-LE, N-CN, F-TF
Course Materials
Students must come everyday with:
Quad-Ruled (graph paper) Notebook
2 Sharpened Pencils

Expectations
Students are expected to comply with all school rules.
Students are expected to follow all teacher instructions, without argument.
Students are expected to come to school EVERY DAY. An emergency is the only legitimate
reason to miss school. Not good reasons to miss school: I didnt feel like coming. I had a
headache. My mom is taking me to _______________. I have a doctors appointment.
Students are expected to come to class on-time, take out their notebooks and pencils, and start on
the Do Now immediately, everyday.
Students are expected to have and keep high standards and goals for themselves in order to thrive,
learn and create, instead of just to pass.
Students are expected to stay actively engaged in working and solving problems for the entire
class period, everyday, unless told otherwise by the teacher.
Students are expected to work together to solve problems. Every student deserves to be taken
seriously, respected and listened to.
Students are expected to COMPLETE every problem we do, no matter what it takes, even if the
student was absent when the work was given. Sometimes students will finish in class, but
sometimes students will need to come after school or finish at home. (Incomplete work will not be
accepted.)
Students are expected to actively monitor their own learning. If a student doesnt understand
something it is his/her responsibility to get the help they need from another student or the teacher.
o Students are not expected to ask, Am I passing? or What is my grade? Instead,
students should ask how the teacher feels the student is progressing toward meeting
Learning Targets.
Students are expected to do all their work neatly and organized in their notebooks. If a worksheet
is handed out, students should tape the worksheet into the notebook, in order. All work should be
dated.
Students are expected to COMPLETE and PRESENT a Final Project in each of the first two
trimesters and the Mathematics Graduation Portfolio that demonstrates they have learned what is
necessary to be successful in 12th grade math.
Grading Policy
ALL WORK WILL BE GRADED. If a student is missing work, it will reflect poorly on the students
grade. Most assignments students will be given three grades that reflect what a mathematics student
should be proficient at:
Communication/Organization (30%)
Effort (30%)
Mathematical Knowledge (40%)
The teacher will look for those three criteria in:
Notebooks, both classwork and homework
- Notebooks will be collected every week or every other week, and the teachers will grade
all the classwork and homework in the notebooks.
Major problems/projects
Performance Based Assessments
Tests and Quizzes will be graded solely in the Mathematical Knowledge category.
More importantly students cannot pass without being at least proficient at all given Learning Targets for
every unit. This will be reflected in the Mathematical Knowledge category.
