Autoplant Data Access in Navisworks2009

This document provides instructions for setting up access to Autoplant data in Navisworks 2009 SP1. It involves installing required software and object enablers, creating an XML template file to define the database connection, importing the template in Navisworks Data Tools, and configuring the ODBC driver with the SQL server details to connect to an Autoplant project database. Once complete, Autoplant component data will be available in the properties panel when files from that project are loaded in Navisworks.

Setting up Autoplant data Access in Navisworks 2009 SP1

First make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the software and any patches.
Installation:
1. Install Navisworks 2009 sp1. There are two versions. Manage 2009.1 and review
2009.1.
2. Install the AutoCad 2004 object enablers (for versions of AutoCad 2004 to 2006).
Should be called nw_2004dwg_oe.msi
3. If you are installing on a machine with Autoplant installed, you will need to
install the Autoplant object enablers and the Prosteel object enablers.
To get Autoplant data to show up you need to set up your databases under data tools.
1. First you need to open up a model drawing.
2. Then go to Tools> Data Tools (also can be found under Tools> File
Options>Datatools, but doesnt bring up the standard xml files)

3. You will see the templates that are standard with Navisworks

4. Select the type of project that your Autoplant project is. For this I am setting up
an Autoplant Central Single-Project.
5. Then highlight the type of project and select Export. Save this XML file on your
desktop or location desired. Ive saved mine as a template and will make a new
file for every Autoplant project because all of my projects in SQL have different
passwords and usernames.
6. Open the saved XML File in notepad editor

7. You will see in the screenshot the Template name in the XML file is the same as
above in Data tools. You will want to change this name. I am changing to match
my Autoplant project name for easy reference.

8. Then back at your Data Tools screen click import and load your newly saved
template file.
9. You should then see your new Link in the list labeled as you did in the XML file.

10. Now you just need to setup your ODBC driver.

In this screen shot is the connection type. I use SQL so the pull down with Autoplant
Project needs to be changed to SQL. Then you need to click setup.

In the setup screen you will need to fill in your SQL server name. You will need to
know if you use a trusted connection (windows login ID) or a specific ID and
Password. Each of my projects uses this method. Then click Options and make sure to
select the specific project database on your SQL server. Then click ok.

Back in the Data Tool screen all you need to do is click the check box beside your
new link and click OK. (I cut the box off in the SS)

11. Now you can open the properties box in review ( or load from the View pull
down)
Then you will see a new tab there with the name of your new link. When you
select a component you will see all the data appear in the properties box.
