As hard as they tried to maintain positive attitudes, they still fought like siblings, and
sometimes it got out of control. At one point, the narrator made Doodle touch the coffin that was
made for him. This shows us that at times it was hard for the narrator to control himself, and be
the perfect older brother he was expected to be. Sometimes it was best for him to act cruel in the
ways that he did, so he could be able to show how much he really loved his brother when it was
all over. Another example would be of the time he left his brother in the rain as he states; The
knowledge that Doodles and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty
within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind a wall of rain dividing us.
(441).Even in the scariest moments of his life, the narrator still had that spark of cruelness, and
as humans , we all make mistakes, so it was relatable for him to leave his brother behind. But, as
the story came to a close, and the narrator discovered his dead brother, he knew it was his entire
fault for leaving him behind. In a way it was his fault, but its mistakes like these that help us to
understand the true meaning of being grateful for love.
In conclusion, as the reader, we are able to acknowledge that nobody is perfect, especially
not siblings. We all have times when we cant stand each other, and accidently send the wrong
message, but it is always out of love. We all make the worst mistakes, but have the best
intentions, so in the end people always show their love and gratitude, and always make up for the
cruel moments in life.
