Mechanical Engineering Course Syllabus
Lesson 1: What is Mechanical Engineering?
What do mechanical engineers do? What tools do they use? What skills and abilities do they need? Students will be introduced to the basics of mechanical engineering through a multimedia presentation and an interactive activity. Lesson 2: Design: A Creative Problem-Solving Process The creative design process will be explored. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of structural design. Design Challenge: Create a straw structure that will hold a bottle of water as high as possible. Lesson 3: Mechanical Motion: Gravity is Holding Us Down! The basic laws of mechanics, including Newtons Laws of Motion, will be discussed. Design Challenge: Create a ground-level slingshot that will propel a plastic ball as far as possible. Lesson 4: Why Things Float and Fly: Buoyancy and Aerodynamics The physics of how things float and fly will be studied. Design Challenge: Create a set of paper airplanes capable of flying the furthest distance and staying aloft the longest. Lesson 5: Out of Control: The Need for Control Systems Students will be introduced to the basics of open-loop and feedback control and their role in engineering devices. Design Challenge: Calibrate your device from Lesson 3 to accurately strike targets at various distances. Lesson 6: Manufacturing Madness Various manufacturing processes will be reviewed and the basis of modern manufacturing - the assembly line will be explored. Design Challenge: Create an assembly line that will produce eight bean-filled fish as quickly and efficiently as possible. Lesson 7: Energy and Work: Sources and Conversion The students will learn about the natural forms of energy and how they can be converted into usable forms of energy. Design Challenge: Create a solar powered cooker that efficiently converts solar energy into heat. Lesson 8: Propulsion: How Fast Can You Go? The students will learn about the fundamentals of ground, sea, and air propulsion. Design Challenge: Create a CO2-propelled boat that travels the greatest distance in the minimum amount of time. Lesson 9: Electromechanical Systems The students will learn about the fundamentals of electromechanical systems, as well as the roles of such devices in modern engineering systems. Design Challenge: Create an electric motor capable of lifting light objects. Lesson 10: Whats Shaking: An Introduction to Mechanical Vibrations Through interactive activities and demonstrations, the students will be introduced to the fundamentals of mechanical vibration.
