Geo B 1 4 Notes

This document defines key concepts related to slope including: - Positive slope lines go up from left to right, negative slope lines go down, and zero slope lines are horizontal. - Parallel lines have the same slope, perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes. - The equation of a line can be found using the point-slope form if given the slope and a point, with the slope either being the given value if parallel, or the opposite reciprocal if perpendicular.

4 Slope Notes
Positive Slope:
goes up from left
to right.
Negative Slope:
goes down from
left to right.

Zero Slope:
horizontal line.

Undefined Slope:
vertical line.

Parallel Slopes

Perpendicular Slopes

Exactly the same

Opposite reciprocals

If one line has a slope of 4 then a

line parallel to it will also have a
slope of 4.

Opposite means different signs, one is positive and

one is negative.
Reciprocals means the fraction is flipped over. *If you
have a whole number, put a 1 underneath it, then flip
it to get the reciprocal.
1

2 is opposite reciprocals with - 2

Equations of Lines
To find an equation of a line you will be given the slope of a line and a point the line passes through.
1st: determine if the equation of the line is parallel or perpendicular to the slope you are given.
* If it is parallel use the slope given, it if is perpendicular find the opposite reciprocal of the slope given.
2nd: use the point slope form 1 = ( 1 )
3rd: plug in the slope for the line you are finding for m and the point you are given for 1 1
4th: simplify and you have your equation!
Example 1:
Find the equation of a line parallel to a line with the slope of 3 passing through the point (4,-8).
1st: the line is parallel, so I will use the slope of 3.
2nd: 1 = ( 1 )
3rd: 8 = 3 4
4th: + 8 = 3 12
= 3 20
Example 2:
2
Find the equation of a line perpendicular to a line with the slope of 3 passing through the point (2,7).
2

1st: the line is perpendicular so I must find the opposite reciprocal of 3. Opposite means it will be negative
2

And the reciprocal of 3 is 2. So the slope I will use is 2

2nd: 1 = ( 1 )
3
3rd: 7 = 2 2
3

4th: 7 = 2 + 3
3

= 2 + 10
