Effective Computer Presentations

This document provides guidelines for creating effective computer presentations for an HPS meeting. It recommends using a dark background with light text sized larger than 24 points. Sans serif fonts like Arial and Helvetica are preferred. Each slide should focus on a single topic and include no more than 5-7 lines of text along with any relevant graphs, tables or photos. Presentations should be limited to about 20 slides for a 15 minute talk. Files must be in PowerPoint 2000 format, less than 15MB, and include embedded fonts and images with simple instantaneous transitions. Dark background with light text
White or yellow on black, dark blue or
dark maroon
Maximize contrast

Avoid gradients to light shades


Avoid borders

Font
Use large font size
>36 point for title, >32 for bullets,
24 for smallest print
This line is in 24 point type

Use sans serif fonts


Arial, Helvetica, Tahoma, Comic Sans MS,
Impact, Verdana

DO NOT USE ALL CAPS

Text
Single topic per slide
Use text to highlight
Verbal remarks fill in detail
Limit text to 5-7 lines
