Grade 4 Geometry

This lesson plan is for a 4th grade geometry class focusing on quadrilaterals. Students will identify and classify different types of quadrilaterals by their geometric properties through various hands-on activities using tools like toothpicks, marshmallows, and pegboards. They will draw and label the quadrilaterals they create, and sort them into categories of rectangles, squares, rhombi, parallelograms, and trapezoids. To assess learning, the teacher will evaluate students' work from the activities and their ability to identify, compare, and classify quadrilaterals correctly.

Overall Expectations:

Identify quadrilaterals and three-dimensional figures and classify them by their geometric properties, and compare

various angles to benchmarks

Construct three-dimensional figures, using two dimensional shapes

Specific Expectations:

Geometric Properties:
Identify and compare different types of quadrilaterals (i.e., rectangle, square, trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus)
and sort and classify them by their geometric properties (e.g., sides of equal length; parallel sides; symmetry;
number of right angles)
Geometric Relationships:
Construct skeletons of three-dimensional figures using a variety of tools

Grade 3: Geometry and Spatial Sense; Geometric

Properties- Identify and compare various polygons (i.e.,
triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons,
heptagons, octagons) and sort them by their geometric
properties (i.e., number of sides; side lengths; number of
interior angles; number of right angles)

Minds on!:
-YouTube video Quadrilateral Rap Math Song will be played for students to watch and listen to on the
projector or SmartBoard.
-Teacher will discuss with students the quadrilaterals and their geometric properties, and write the
information on the board or chart paper for students to refer to.

Lesson Overview: Estimated Length 45 minutes

Activity 1
Think-Pair-Share
- Using a Think-Pair-Share technique students will individually approximately 3 minutes to draw and label
quadrilateral shapes on a blank piece of paper.
- Students will then collaborate with the students in their desk groups.
- Students will draw and label the quadrilateral shapes they came up with on a sheet of chart. paper. Students
will then classify the quadrilaterals by their geometric properties.
- Students will present and discuss their poster with their findings to their classmates and teacher. Posters will
then be poste around the room.
*Note: Half of the class can begin at Activity 2 and the other can begin at activity 3. Once students complete
the activity they can rotate to the next *
Activity 2
Building Quadrilaterals with Toothpicks and Mini-Marshmallows
- Build 2-D and 3-D quadrilateral shapes using toothpicks and mini-marshmallows as connectors.
- Once students create their shapes they can use scotch tape to adhere their shapes onto construction paper.
- Students will write the name of each quadrilateral below their toothpick-marshmallow quadrilateral, and identify
the geometric properties for each.
Activity 3
Pegboard and Elastic Quadrilateral Shapes
- Students will use pegboards and elastics to create 2D quadrilateral shapes.
- Students will draw the quadrilateral shapes they created on a sheet of paper and identify them by their name
and geometric properties.

Consolidation:
- Students present their pegboard quadrilaterals or toothpick quadrilaterals to the class and
discuss what characteristics and geometric properties they learned about quadrilaterals.
Home Activity
Quadrilateral Chart
- Students will be provided with the Quadrilateral Chart to fill in at home
- Students will be instructed to find quadrilateral shapes around their home and draw and discuss them on the
back of their Quadrilateral Chart activity

Evaluation-Formative
Students work from Activities 1, 2, and 3 will be evaluated. Students will be assessed on whether they demonstrate
the ability to:
- Identify and compare different types of quadrilaterals
- Sort and classify quadrilaterals by their geometric properties
- Communicate mathematical vocabulary
- Create a variety of representations of mathematical ideas

Look at the quadrilaterals in the chart below. Fill in the boxes according to how
many right angles, pairs of parallel sides, and pairs of congruent sides each shape
has. Then circle the words that describe what kind of quadrilateral it is.
Hint!
Some of the quadrilaterals may have more than one word!
