Yale-NUS College
Jointly created by Yale University and
the National University of Singapore,
Yale-NUS College is designed to
achieve the highest rating under the

sustainable designed residential
colleges for 1,000 students, balances
the traditions of Yale with the cultural
and climatic influences of Southeast
Asia.

Metalgrill panels of varying degrees of
large openings complete the concrete
facade, while enabling light and air to

the woods.
Studios and office centers are
organized around an upper
internal lawn with hanging ivy,
while additional informal green
learning areas weave in and out

LOCATION: Ahmedabad
ARCHITECT: B V Doshi

Nature of Learning :
Year 1&2 : development of
basic architectural skills
drawing,model making ,
communications etc.
The Majors : Architectural
design, urban design, History
Theory and
Criticism,Conseravtion studies,
Sustainable design

Concept and Design:

The language Doshi has used is of
exposed brick with concrete,
emphasising the slabs and the
beams to create a natural coarse
texture which has weathered over
the years and now almost forms
part of the land.
The buildings are organised as
double storeyed linear masses,
open from both sides, letting in
plenty of light and ventilation into
the studios.
In addition, there are inclined
skylights on top of the studios,
perpetually letting in natural light
into the spaces.

The entry to the complex is through a long axis which ends up

in facing a blank wall.after a turn you find steps leading to
library. Small units such as wood work shop, TV room and a
small canteen in a corner of studio block are provided .

There are external built in seats which encourage discussions

and which over the years have evolved into the most active
vibrant part of the entire campus. Both students and faculty sit
around this space.

External spaces and platforms, which act as extensions into the

open nature. There exists a harmony running throughout the
whole campus, building and nature coexisting in a comfortable
relationship.

The Art School Extension consists of

an 8600sqm new building of studios,
workshops and a gallery; and a
9000sqm refurbishment of a 1960s Arts

and lively environment to work and
study often described as an huge
exciting arena.
The working heart of the building
comprises open studios, workshops and
teaching spaces (known as the Design
Shed.)
A second element is a seven storey
Vertical Gallery. This is the linking piece
between the existing 1960s arts tower
(known as the Chatham Building) and the
new studio building. This vertical gallery is
used to showcase work.

Hybrid Studio Space:

The open studio space places a great focus on collaborative working in
an atmosphere that is inherently creative, where students and faculty can
work on projects.
The Hybrid Studio is also an environment in which students can proudly
display their work in a setting that is light and easy to explore.
Materials:
The interiors , study area are of concrete with distinct grades. Rough is
used in back stairwells giving a sense of rawness .
Double height cast concrete columns articulate the central spaces of the
design shed which were developed from an early 20th century wallpaper
design.
Oak linings was given to stairs and linking corridors which span the
vertical gallery . These provide a warmth to soften the hard edges of steel
and concrete which form the structure.

YEAR : 2014

The teaching spaces of La

streetscape, encouraging students
to engage with the buildings
context and allowing the city to
permeate the ribbed veil of the
facade.
The transparent plinth gives the
feeling that a gravitational force
has pulled the building upwards
leaving it to rest on stiletto heels,
allowing the city in underneath.

The central location presented

a rare opportunity for an
architecture school to engage in
a dialogue between the city and
the study of architecture.

The buildings massing consists of

two-storey blocks stacked on top of
each other. The lower block

ground floor plinth, while the
uppermost block steps back,
providing the maximum volume
within the constraints set by the
planning regulations. The blocks
are unified by the common

The new school was above all designed as a tool for its students, a
means to experience the study of architecture and to provide shared
spaces in which to interact, collaborate and discover.

It presents a raw but highly
modulated composition of fluted
timber and panel surfaces. These are
countered internally by large concrete

along the other side of the street are

natural climatic cooling and
