The scientific method guides you through your project by providing steps to follow.
Step 1 Choose your topic
What is the Question you are going to study?
This part is when you select your topic.
Step 2 - Research your topic.
Utilize the public library, school library, internet and other resources to gather
background information.
Step 3 - Plan your experiment
Create your step by step process to conduct the experiment.
Form a hypothesis.
Determine your variables.
Step 4 - Conduct the experiment.
This is when you will actually perform the test.
Step 5 Collect and Record Data.
Be sure to record all of your observations.
Use a data table to record the information you collect during the experiment.
Make tables, graphs, pie charts, etc.
Step 6 Analyze the Data
Explain the information you collected during the experiment in complete sentences.
Step 7 - State your Conclusions.
Explain what you learned from the experiment connecting back to your research. How
could your experiment be improved? List the questions you have as a result of the
experiment.
Step 8 Present your Findings
Design a display board with all the work you did before,
during, and after your experiment. Practice your presentation
in front of classmates before you present at science fair!

Brainstorm:
This Science Fair journal should begin with these questions:
- What am I interested in?
- What questions do I want to know the answer to?
- What problems do I see in the world/home/school that I think need to be solved?
From your answers you should have a better idea of what you could possibly study for science fair. Do you
want to create a recycling or composting program for the school? Do you want to design a remote control
finder for your grandmother who always loses it? Are you interested in genetic inheritance? Are you
interested in plant growth or organic urban farming? Do you want to survey people about the amount of
time they spend on Facebook vs. doing homework? Do you want to challenge the lunch program and its
limited options?
- What am I interested in?
- What questions do I want to
know the answer to?
- What problems do I see in the
world/home/school that I think
need to be solved?

Conducting Your Experiment
Preparations
With your detailed experimental procedure in hand, you are almost ready
to start your science experiment. But before you begin there are still a few
more things to do:
Know what to do. Read and understand your experimental
procedure. Are all of the necessary steps written down? Do you have
any questions about how to do any of the steps?
Be prepared. Collect and organize all materials, supplies and
equipment you will need to do the experiment. Do you have all of
the materials you need? Are they handy and within reach of your
workspace?
Think ahead about safety! Are there any safety precautions you
should take? Will you need adult supervision? Will you need to wear gloves or protective eye gear?
Do you have long hair that needs to be pulled back out of your face? Will you need to be near a fire
extinguisher?
During the Experiment
It is very important to take very detailed notes as you conduct your experiments. In addition to your data,
record your observations as you perform the experiment. Write down any problems that occur, anything
you do that is different than planned, ideas that come to mind, or interesting occurrences. Be on the
lookout for the unexpected. Your observations will be useful when you analyze your data and draw
conclusions.
The data that you record now will be the basis for your science fair project final report and your
conclusions so capture everything in your laboratory notebook, including successes, failures, and
accidents.
If possible, take pictures of your experiment along the way, these will later help you explain what you did
and enhance your display for the science fair.
Remember to use numerical measurements as much as possible. If your experiment also has qualitative
data (not numerical), then take a photo or draw a picture of what happens.
Be as exact as possible about the way you conduct your experiment, especially in following your
experimental procedure, taking your measurements, and note taking. Failures and mistakes are part of the
learning process, so don't get discouraged if things do not go as planned the first time. You should have
built enough time in your schedule to allow you to repeat your test a couple of times.
In fact, it's a good idea to do a quick preliminary run of your experiment. Show your preliminary data to
your mentor or teacher, and make revisions to your experimental procedure if necessary. Often there are
glitches in the procedure that are not obvious until you actually perform your experiment--this is normal. If
you need to make changes in the procedure (which often happens), write down exactly the changes you
made.
Stay organized and be safe! Keep your workspace clean and organized as you conduct your experiment.
Keep your supplies within reach. Use protective gear and adult supervision as needed. Keep any
chemicals away from pets and younger brothers or sisters.

Plan Your Data Table:
Data Table
Prepare a data table to help you collect your data. A
data table will ensure that you are consistent in
recording your data and will make it easier to analyze
your results once you have finished your experiment.
Plan your data table below:
(Use a Ruler and refer to the checklists on page 24)
Date: ______________/ Page 21
Collect your Data:
Date: ______________/ Page 22
How to Graph Your Data:
Graphs are an excellent way to display your
results. In fact, most good science fair projects
have at least one graph.
For any type of graph:
Every graph needs a Title!
The Effect of _______ on _______.
Place your independent variable on the
x-axis of your graph and the dependent variable on the y-axis.
Be sure to label the axes of your graph don't forget to include the units of measurement
(grams, centimeters, liters, etc.)
Make a Blank example of your Graph here:

1. State ALL the results of the experiment (1 paragraph)
For each result state a supporting fact(s) from the data.
For example: All coke cans with sugar sank in water. Classic Coke and Caffeine-Free coke have
sugar and they sank. All cans with Nutra-sweet floated. Diet coke and Caffeine-free diet coke have
nutra-sweet and they floated. Caffeine made no difference in whether cokes sank or floated.
Caffeine-free coke sank, but Diet Caffeine-free coke floated.
