But Forgettings not

I can relate to this quote in the book,

I have a hard time remembering to
do my work and turning it in on time.

something you do, it

happens to you. Only it
didnt happen to me

2.

My father was killed

driving. I was two.

I wonder if this is one of the reasons

why he turned into a psychopath? I
believe that it would be interesting at
the very least to see how this
wouldve turned out if his father was
in the picture.

When you dont have

money, you always think
things will be very
different after.

I hardly ever have much money on

me besides my allowance for chores,
I can relate to this quote though. I
alway think that when I have money
ill be able to do almost anything. But
like the quote, money isnt
everything, in fact it's far from it.

4.

Then somehow I was the

man that attacked her,
only I didnt hurt her; I
captured her and drove
her off in the van to a
remote house and there I
kept her captive in a nice
way.

I believe that the author put this

quote here to help us realize just how
crazy Frederick really is. The fact
that he believes there is a nice way to
kidnap a girl and hold her captive
proves to the reader that he is
mentally unstable.

5.

In one of the Sunday

papers I saw an advert in
capitals in a page of houses
for sale. I wasnt looking
for them, this just seemed
to catch my eye as I was
turning the page. FAR
FROM THE MADDING
CROWD? it said. Just like
that. Then it went on: Old
cottage, charming secluded
situation, large garden, 1
hr. by car London, two
miles from nearest
village

He just had a dream about kidnaping

Miranda and taking her to a house.
And now hes buying a cottage in a
secluded area. The reader should
be able to realize that the author is
hoping that you put two and two
together.

I worked for a month or

more getting my plans
ready. I was alone all the
time; not having any real
friends was lucky.

I cant believe how crazy he is,

spending a whole month planning
how hes going to kidnap Miranda.

D-I

7.

Then she came round the

end of the open back door,
and I stood back as if to let
her see. She bent forward
to peer in, I flashed a look
down the road, no one, and
then I got her

Its Crazy how many times this

actually happens in the real world.
People just go up to people and
kidnap them.

8.

I put the gag on again. She

struggled, I heard her say
under the cloth, no, no, it
was horrible, but I made
myself do it because I
knew it was for the best in
the end

If this were taking place in real life,

fredrick would at the very least be
put in a mental institution and called
a psychopath. He believes that what
he is doing is for her greater good.

T-W

9.

I put the gag on again. She

struggled, I heard her say

It makes me sick how people could

actually think that what they are

T-S

under the cloth, no, no, it

was horrible, but I made
myself do it because I
knew it was for the best in
the end

doing is actually helping them. For

example, hitler probably thought
what he was doing was right, when
in reality he has no sense of morality
whatsoever.

10.

10

{Whose orders? she said

again. I tried to think of
someone. I dont know
why, the only name I could
think of she might know
was Mr. Singleton. He was
the manager of the
Barclays. I knew her father
banked there. I saw him
several times in there
when I was, and talking
with Mr. Singleton. Mr.
Singletons orders, I said.}

So far throughout the story, weve

seen just how smart and clever
frederick thinks he is. When he tells
her this lie that he planned up i
believe he thinks hes got her right
where he wants her.

T-I

11.

11

{Do you think youll make

me love you by keeping me
prisoner?I want you to get
to know me.As long as Im
here youll just be a
kidnapper to me. You
know that?I got up. I
didnt want to be with her
any more.}

This is classic behavior of a

psychopath. They believe that what
they are doing is right and that their
going to be praised and loved by all.
But when it doesnt turn out the way
that they want they get upset or mad
and lash out on their victims.

T-W

12.

12

{Please, she said. Very

gently and nicely. It was
difficult to resist. It was
like not having a net and
catching a specimen you
wanted in your first and
second fingers}

This quote reminds me of many

sheltered people. and scientist. The
fact that he compares her to
butterflies and calls her a specimen
proves that he really thinks that he
can just have Miranda all to himself.

T-T

13.

13

The next morning she

made the first attempt to
escape. She didnt catch me
off guard, exactly, but it

I believe that Miranda is doing the

right thing trying to escape. I would
try and do that same thing if I were

T-S

taught me a lesson. She

had her breakfast and then
she told me her bed was
loose, it was the far back
leg, right up in the corner. I
thought it was going to
collapse, she said, theres a
nut loose. Like a mutt I
went to help her hold it
and suddenly she gave me
a heavy push, just as I was
off balance, and ran past
me.

her. She might come to regret it

though in the future.

14.

15

Theres never been

anyone but you Ive ever
wanted to know.Thats
the worst kind of illness,
she said. She turned round
then, all this was while I
was tying. She looked
down. I feel sorry for
you.

Miranda is trying to appeal to

frederick and make him realize what
hes doing isnt right. This is what
any logical human being would do, I
just hope for Mirandas sake that he
doesnt snap on her.

T-W

15.

16

Theyre beautiful. But

sad.Everythings sad if
you make it so, I said. But
its you who make it so!

Frederick is looking at life so bleak. If

he would think more positively
maybe Miranda would like him more.

T-S

16.

16

You dont even share it.

Who sees these? Youre
like a miser, you hoard up
all the beauty in these
drawers.

Frederick is keeping all of his

butterflies and other beautiful things
in one drawer so only he can have
them. Just like with Miranda.

T-T

17.

17

When you draw

something it lives and
when you photograph it it
dies.

I can really relate with this quote,

being in the digital media program I
understand what Miranda is saying.
Basically that when you draw
something it creates life and you can
make it as vibrant and colorful and

T-S

full of life as you want. Where as a

photo is just the object still and
essentially lifeless.
18.

18

Then, here, she said and

held out the drawing. It
was really good, it really
amazed me, the likeness. It
seemed to make me more
dignified, better-looking
than I really was. Would
you consider selling this, I
asked? I hadnt, but I will.
Two hundred guineas? All
right, I said. She gave me
another sharp look. Youd
give me two hundred
guineas for that? Yes, I
said. Because you did it.
Give it to me. I handed it
back and before I knew
what, she was tearing it
across.

This probably wasnt Mirandas

smartest move, since it was obvious
that Frederick really liked it want
wanted it. This will more than likely
irritate him a lot, which isnt what
she should do. Its like she's toying
with his emotions.

T-W

19.

19

Of course it wasnt all

peace and light, several
times she tried to escape,
which just showed. Luckily
I was always on the
look-out.

This would be so much better if he

would just show her gestures of good
faith. Maybe then she wouldnt
constantly try to escape in the first
place.

D-I

20.

20

She had moods that

changed so quick that I
often got left behind. She
liked to get me stumbling
after her.

Like most girls Miranda likes playing

hard to get. But this could end badly
for her though. He might get sick and
tired of playing and become more
forceful.

T-W

21.

21

We all want things we

Its very ironic that Fredrick says

this, since he himself falls victim to
his own desires of having the girl.

T-T

Is Frederick actually thinking of

killing Miranda? All of this began

T-T

can't have. Being a decent

human being is accepting
that

22.

23

I had a horrible dream

one night when they came
5

and I had to kill her before

they came in the room. It
seemed like a duty and I
had only a cushion to kill
her with. I hit and hit and
she laughed and then I
jumped on her and
smothered her and she lay
still, and then when I took
the cushion away she was
lying there laughing, shed
only pretended to die. I
woke up in a sweat, that
was the first time I ever
dreamed of killing
anyone.

because she told him to kill his old

life and start a new.

23.

24

I dont even know if I

didnt think I would keep
the agreement, even
though it was forced out of
me and forced promises
are no promises, as they
say.

I understand where Frederick is

coming from, he isnt sure if he can
follow through with his promises.
This is a part of basic human nature
to question things.

T-S

24.

25

If you escaped now, you

could still say I imprisoned
you. But if I take you home,
I can say I released you. I
know its silly, I said. Of
course I was acting it a bit.
It was a very difficult
situation.

Now after all of this hes worried

about his image. Whether or not he
imprisoned her or released her.
Either way what he did was wrong.

T-T

25.

26

Then suddenly she acted,

I knew it was coming, I
was ready for it, what I
wasnt ready for was the
sound of a car outside. Just
as it came up to the house,

I dont understand why Miranda had

to try and escape now. He might have
let you go tomorrow, I dont think
that this was smart at all. Sure he
might go back on his word, but he

T-T

she reached with her foot

like to warm it, but all of a
sudden she kicked a
burning log out of the
hearth on to the carpet, at
the same moment
screamed and ran for the
window, then seeing they
were padlocked, for the
door

wouldnt be forceful or aggressive

towards you.

26.

27

I knew like in a flash I had

slipped at last. Left it out
on the sill of the kitchen
window and she must have
spotted it. Just one
mistake, and you lose
everything.

I can kinda relate to this quote, I'm

constantly tripping and falling down.
I feel like if I'd forget something like
this.

T-S

27.

28

the first thing she did was

to stand up and ask me
how my head was. I knew
by the way she asked that
she was trying to be
different. Kind

This quote is really interesting, since

she is the one who did this to his
head. Maybe she wants something
out of this?

D-I

28.

29

I noticed she had a lot of

her French scent on, shed
done her hair up the way
she did it before, and she
was wearing a purple and
white housecoat I bought
her.

I believe that Miranda is trying to

seduce Frederick so that she can
escape. Which is not like her at all, i
wonder how he'll react to all of this.

T-T

29.

30

It was terrible, it made me

feel sick and trembling, I
wished I was on the other
side of the world. It was
worse than with the
prostitute; I didnt respect
her, but with Miranda I

Frederick seems to hate what

Miranda did to try and escape. It's
obvious now that he no longer can
respect her, he used to look at her as
being better than everyone else.

T-T

knew I couldnt stand the

shame.

30.

31

She knelt in front of the

fire. Its fantastic. Were
further apart than ever. I
said, you hated me before.
Now I suppose you despise
me as well.

Many people start to feel like this and

it's only natural for humans to act
like this. The fact that Miranda is
happy there further apart.

T-W

31.

32

I want to take pictures of

you like you were the
other evening, I said. She
sat on the end of her bed.
Go on. And youve got to
look as if you enjoyed
posing, I said. You got to
pose the way I tell you.

This is a big problem in today's

society, with teenagers and young
adults sending nude pictures to each
other.

T-W

32.

33

I felt happy, I cant

explain, I saw I was weak
before, now I was paying
her back for all the things
she said and thought about
me.

Frederick is happy that he was able

to overpower Miranda and get inside
of her head.

D-I

33.

34

It was not my fault. How

was I to know she was iller
than she looked. She just
looked like she had a cold.

Frederick is starting to feel guilty

about mistreating Miranda and can't
accept the fact that lts his fault she's
sick.

T-T

34.

35

But his eyes are mad.

Grey with a grey lost light
in them.

This quote really stood out to me

because Miranda is describing
Frederick in detail for the first time.

D-I

35.

36

I told him he didnt look a

wicked person. He said,
this is the first wicked
thing Ive ever done.

Just because someone didn't look like

a wicked person doesn't mean that
they aren't one. For example a cat
might look cute but might bite you.

T-W

36.

37

I cant write in a vacuum

like this. To no one. When I
draw I always think of
someone like G.P. at my
shoulder

This quote is interesting because

Miranda describes her area as a
vacuum, implying a void of life.

D-I

37.

38

When I came out, wearing

the least horrid of the
shirts hed bought for me,
he stood up (hes been
sitting all the time by the
door). I felt like the
girl-at-the-ball-coming-do
wn-the-grand-staircase. I
knocked him over, I
suppose it was seeing me
in his shirt. And with my
hair down. Or perhaps it
was just shock at seeing
me without the gag.

To many girls they want to look their

best for dances, Miranda is being
forced to.

T-W

39.

39

I hate the way I have

changed. I accept too
much.

T-S

40

40

Yesterday evening he
wanted to take a
photograph of me. I let him
take several. I think, he
may be careless,
