Power System Assignment

This document provides instructions for 4 assignments involving power system analysis: 1) Determine fault current, voltages, and line currents for a 3 bus system during a 3 phase fault. 2) Calculate the bus impedance matrix for a power network using the Z bus building algorithm. 3) For a 3 bus system: a) calculate the bus impedance matrix, b) determine the new matrix with a line outage, c) modify the matrix with a ground reactance, d) modify the matrix with a parallel line, and e) modify the matrix with a changed line reactance and compare. 4) Obtain the original unbalanced phasors given the symmetrical components of 3 phase currents.

EEL 791: Assignment IV

1. Single line diagram of 3 bus power system is as shown in Figure 1. Each generator is
represented by an emf behind the subtransient reactance. All impedances are expressed in
per unit on common MVA base. All resistances and shunt capacitances are neglected.
The generators are operating at no load at their rated voltages. A three phase fault occurs
midway on line 1-2 through a fault impedance of Z f = j 0.15 per unit. Determine the

fault current, bus voltages and line currents during fault.

2. Using the method of Z bus building algorithm, find the bus impedance matrix for the
network shown in Figure 2.

3. Figure 3 shows a simple network.
a. Find out the bus impedance matrix using Z bus building algorithm.
b. Suppose there is a line outage and line connecting bus 1 and 2 is removed. Using the Z
bus building algorithm, determine the new Zbus.
c. If in the original system of Figure 3, an inductive reactance of j0.25 is connected from
bus 3 to ground, modify Z bus obtained in (a) above.

d. Suppose in the original system of Figure 3, another parallel line is connected between
bus 1 and 3, of value j0.2 per unit. Modify the Z bus obtained in (a) above.
e. Now suppose, reactance of line connecting bus 1 and 3 of original figure is j0.1 instead
of j0.2. Find out the Z bus and compare it with that obtained in (d) above.

4. The symmetrical components of a set of unbalanced three phase currents are
I a0 = 4 30 o , I a1 = 490 o , I a2 = 430 o . Obtain the original unbalanced phasors.
