Blood Sampling - Heelstick and Fingerstick

This document discusses blood sampling from the heel or finger of infants. It notes that blood sampling is indicated for laboratory studies and is generally unaffected by hemolysis. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, and osteomyelitis. The procedure involves warming the area, cleaning with alcohol, puncturing the heel or finger with a lancet, wiping away the first drop of blood before collecting the sample, and alternately squeezing and releasing pressure on the leg or hand to facilitate blood flow.
