The Vancouver School Board is seeking parental consent for students in grades 4-7 from divisions 5 and 9 of Ecole Laura Secord Elementary to participate in a field trip to receive fencing instruction from Rising Star Fencing Club on January 14th and 21st from 1-3pm. The purpose is for students to learn basic fencing skills and the importance of fair play, hard work, and competition in a unique sport. Certified coaches will provide all necessary safety equipment. Parents must sign a consent form acknowledging some risk of injury but that the activity is suitable for their child.

To Parents and Guardians:
The purpose of this form is to inform you about a proposed activity involving your child, and to seek your support and permission for your child to participate. Such activities are part of the school program and they provide students with valuable learning experiences. However, should you not wish your child to participate in this activity, school staff will assign the student other learning activities at the school.
Nature of Activity: Fencing
Dates: January 14th and 21st between 1:00pm and 3:00pm Educational Purpose of the Activity: Students will receive an introduction to the sport of fencing and the basic skills required. Rising Star Fencing Club will be in our school teaching these skills and the importance of fair play, hard work and competition in a dynamic and unique sport. Special Safety Information (if any)
The certified coaching staff from Rising Star have many years of experience. They will provide all the required equipment including sabers, chest protection, gloves and masks. Parent/Guardian Permission While school staff will take reasonable steps to prevent injuries to students, some degree of risk is inherent in the nature of this activity, and may occur with out without fault on the part of the student, school board, its employees or agents, or the facility where the activity is taking place. By allowing your child to participate in this activity, you are agreeing that the activity described above is suitable for your child, and that there is a risk of injury associated with the activity.
