Fire Explosion
Fire Explosion
Instructions: Solve the following problems. Any of the group members will be asked to present the answer
(using Power Point slides) to the whole section.
1. Hydrocarbon compounds such as toluene is a flammable liquid and is a fire hazard during a purging process
to empty a vessel from its vapour. As a chemical engineer your tasks are:
a. Determine whether a mixture of 10% toluene in air is flammable or not and give your reasons.
[Ans : Inflammable]
b. Use equation 6-15 to determine the LOC for toluene and compare this value with Table 6-3. Discuss
why the values are different?
c. If a 10000 kg toluene storage tank explodes, determine the TNT equivalency? Assuming a 5% of
explosion efficiencies. [Ans : 4448kg TNT]
d. Suggest at least 2 ways to minimize the risk of fire explosion for the toluene storage system.
2. Your plant site is planning to install a pressure vessel containing a total of 500 kg of ethylene oxide. Your
boss, however, is concerned about the tank leakage and tank rupture and the possibility of a vapor cloud
explosion of all the ethylene oxide. Thus, you as a new engineer have been assigned a task to:
a) Determine the expected number of death to 200 workers in the case if the tank leaked and releasing the
ethylene with concentration of 11000 mg/m3 for 4 hours. [Ans : 152 deaths]
b) Determine the distance between the ethylene oxide tank and the control room to ensure that the control
room will receive only limited minor structural damage if any explosion occurred. Assume an explosion
efficiency of 3%. [Ans : 222.5 meters]
c) Estimate the number of workers that will suffer from eardrum ruptures if the explosion occurred.
Note: The working area conditions are assumed at 25C and 1 atm. The plant has 200 employees.
