Assignment 1: MCB 3073 Manufacturing Technology 2 (Submit Before: 23 June 2014, 3 PM, at Block 19)

This document is an assignment for a manufacturing technology course. It provides instructions for students to calculate: (1) the maximum possible draft of rolling an aluminum plate from 100mm to 85mm thickness, (2) whether a single roll is possible and why, (3) the force required for rolling using an average true stress of 250MPa, and (4) whether rolling at 300°C is considered cold or hot rolling. Students are also asked to compare the microstructures formed from rolling at room temperature versus 300°C.

Aluminium plate (thickness= 100 mm, width= 5000 mm, melting point = 660 0C) is rolled at room temperature to achieve the
thickness of 85 mm. Diameter of rolled used is 1 m with the coefficient of friction is 0.2.
a. Calculate the maximum possible draft of the process. [3 MARKS]
b. Is it possible to do a single rolling from 100 to 85 mm? Why? [1 MARK]
c. Calculate the force required (N) to do rolling process if the average true stress is 250 MPa. [2 MARKS]
d. If the process is done at 3000C, determine whether it is cold rolling or hot rolling. [2 MARKS]
e. Compare the microstructure formed by rolling at room temperature and at 3000C. [2 MARKS]
