See Page 3 For Problem 4: Problem Set 2 Due Wednesday September 10, 2003

This document contains the details of Homework Problem Set 2 for EECS 105 ELEC 310, a class on electronics taught at University of California, Berkeley in Fall 2003 by Professor A. Niknejad. It includes 5 practice problems related to transfer functions, transimpedance amplifiers, MOSFET small signal models, and their frequency responses.

Homework
Problem
Set 2# 6
Due Wednesday September 10, 2003
1. Sketch the magnitude Bode plot for the following transfer function. Label
all critical slopes and points
H(j) =

104 (j + 2)
(j + 10)(j + 100)

2. Given the asymptotic magnitude characteristic shown below, determine the transfer
function.

3.

The input to an amplifier is i s (t) = (2 A)!cos(2!20MHzt+/2 )

The output voltage of the amplifier is measured as v out (t) = (120 mV)!cos(2!20MHz!t + 45).
We define the transimpendance of the amplifier in the frequency domain as Z m = Vout / Is .
Find the magnitude Z m in the frequency domain in dB() at 20 MHz.
What is the phase of the transimpedance in radians at 20 MHz?

4. P10.13 of Howe & Sodini.

See page 3 for Problem 4

5. For the MOSFET M1 in the figure below, the following parameters apply:
x VT0 = 0.7 V
x PnCOX = 50 PA/V2
x W/L = 20 Pm / 1 Pm
x O = 0 V-1
x Cgs = 100 fF, Cgd = 20 fF
x J=0
x RS = 3 k:; RL = 10 k:; RE = 1 k:

a) Find bias voltage VB such that the bias voltage at VO is 3V.

b) Draw the small signal model of the circuit, including Cgs and Cgd, but no other
small signal capacitances.
c) Find the low-frequency small-signal voltage gain (vo/vin).
d) Find the transition frequency ZT for a similarly biased common-source
amplifier.
e) Find the location of the dominant pole.
f) Now insert a 20 pF capacitor in parallel with RE. This adds a pole and a zero
to the transfer function. Where do they occur? How do they affect the
maximum gain of the circuit? How do they affect the location of the pole
found in part e)? Draw the gain bode plot.
