Industrial Electronics ESN 3223: Instructor: Engr. Nabeel Khalid

This document is a lecture outline for Week 1 of the Industrial Electronics course ESN 3223 taught by Engr. Nabeel Khalid. The outline covers materials used in electronics, comparing conductors and semiconductors, comparing silicon and germanium, and current in semiconductors. Key points include that materials are classified as conductors, insulators, or semiconductors based on atomic structure, and that semiconductors like silicon and germanium are important materials in electronics due to their electrical properties between conductors and insulators.

Materials used in Electronics

Three types of materials based on the atomic structure.
Conductors
Insulators
Semiconductors

Examples
Examples of insulators are rubber, plastics, glass, mica, and
quartz.
The best conductors are single-element materials, such as
copper (Cu), silver (Ag), gold (Au), and aluminum (Al).

Single-element semiconductors are antimony (Sb), arsenic (As),

astatine (At), boron (B), polonium (Po), tellurium (Te), silicon (Si),
and germanium (Ge).
Compound semiconductors such as gallium arsenide, indium
phosphide, gallium nitride, silicon carbide, and silicon
germanium are also commonly used.
