6.1 Graphing Quadratic Functions

This document provides instructions for graphing quadratic functions. It defines key terms like parabola, y-intercept, axis of symmetry, and vertex. It then provides an example of graphing the quadratic equation x^2 + 8x + 9 = 0 in 5 steps: 1) finding the y-intercept, 2) finding the axis of symmetry, 3) finding the vertex, 4) determining the direction of opening, and 5) finding the maximum or minimum value. It includes 3 practice problems and asks the student to graph specific quadratic functions.

Section 6.1: Graphing Quadratic Functions

A QUADRATIC EQUATION can be written in the form ax2 + bx +c = 0 , (where a 0)

The graph of a quadratic function is called PARABOLA
DEFINITIONS
Y-intercept: Is the point where the parabola crosses the y- axis
Axis of Symmetry: Is a dotted line that cuts the parabola in two equal parts
Vertex: Is the point where the parabola opens

EX1: Graph x2 + 8x + 9 = 0

Step 1: Find the y-intercept (0, c)

Step 3: Find the vertex  2a , f  2a  
  

Step 4:.Direction of opening (UP or DOWN)

Step 5: Maximum or Minimum Value. (The y-coord of the vertex)

ST2. Graph f(x)= 2 – 4x + x2

EX3. Graph f(x)= 9 – 4x + x2 ST3. Graph f(x)= - x2 + 2x +3
