Bistable Multivibrator

This document describes an experiment to verify the stable states of a bistable multivibrator circuit using transistors. The circuit consists of two transistors connected in a cross-coupled configuration with resistors. A bistable multivibrator has two stable output states and can remain indefinitely in one state until an external trigger induces an abrupt transition to the other state. The procedure involves observing the base and collector voltages of each transistor initially, then applying a trigger pulse to switch the circuit to the other stable state and observing the voltage changes.

THEORY: Multivibrators are basically regenerative circuits comprising of two cross coupled
active devices like bipolar junction transistors. The output states of multivibrator depend on the
nature of coupling between the active elements. A bistable multivibrator has two stable output
states. It can exist indefinitely in one of the two stable states and it can be induced to make an
abrupt transition from one state to the other by means of external excitation. Bistable
multivibrators are known wide variety of names, such as Eccles Jordan circuit , trigger circuit,
flip flop and binary. A bistable multivibrator is used for performance of many digital operations
such as counting and storing of binary information. The circuit also finds extensive application
in the generation and processing of pulse type waveforms.
PROCEDURE;
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Connections are made as per the circuit diagram

Switch on the power supply VCC & VEE .
Observe the voltages at the base and collector of the transistors Q1 & Q2.
Apply a positive pulse (trigger) at the base of the OFF transistor.
Again observe the voltages at the collectors and bases of both the transistors.

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Loose and wrong connections must be avoided.
2. Readings must be taken without parallax error.
