Marxist Film Theory

Marxism is a method of societal analysis that focuses on class

relations and societal conflict that uses materialist interpretation of
historical development and a dialectical view of social
transformation.

Marxist film theory came from the ideas of Karl Marx and have been
represented in many genres ranging from documentary to fictional
dramas. The Marxist theories of socialism, communism, class struggle,
ideology and political economy influenced early Soviet-era
filmmakers such as Dziga Vertov and Sergei Eisenstein. Also Marxs
principal work have all been represented in film as subjects in their
own right.

Auteurs Directors

Stanley Kubrick can definitely be

classified as an auteur director
because of his distinguishable style
and interior meaning in his films.
This is evident in many of his well
known films.

Alfred Hitchcock is also an auteur

director, his then unique style is
instantly recognizable to an
audience. In his films he makes the
camera make human movements
and how he has scenes with no
dialogue. This is also evident in his
film Psycho.

Ken Loach as an Auteur

When British auteurs are discussed many names are mentioned such
as John Boorman, Mike Leigh, Stanley Kubrick and Ken Loach.

Although Ken Loach himself wouldnt say he is an auteur because

he isnt like your typical Hollywood director, his work would have
auteurism to it as his films follow similar styles. Loach would be known
for his naturalistic and social realist directing style. Also most of
Loachs films would generally focus on social issues such as
homelessness and labour rights. His work shows that he would be the
primary creative force behind the films which would make him an
auteur.
