Cbe 230 Final Exam Review Problems (2011) : Example 1. A Superheated Steam at 100kpa and 150

This document provides 4 examples of thermodynamics problems from a 2011 CBE 230 Final Exam Review. Example 1 asks to calculate the shaft work and discharge conditions for a steam compression process. Example 2 involves an irreversible, isothermal gas compression and calculating entropy change. Example 3 describes a gas cycle and asks for thermal efficiency. Example 4 deals with heat transfer between reservoirs and calculating entropy generation and lost work.

CBE 230 Final Exam Review Problems (2011)

Example 1. A superheated steam @ 100kPa and 150oC is

compressed adiabatically in an ideal compressor to 300 kPa
at a mass rate of 1 kg/s. Find (1) the shaft work required
and (2) temperature and state of the discharge stream.
Example 2. 1 mole of an ideal gas is compressed
isothermally but irreversibly @ 130oC from 2.5 bar to 6.5
bar in a piston/cylinder device. The work required is 30%
greater than that of reversible, isothermal compression.
The heat transferred from the gas during compression to a
hot reservoir @ 25oC. Find Suniv.

Example 3. A reversible cycle executed by 1 mole of an ideal
gas for which Cp = 3.5R and Cv = 2.5R consisting of the
following: (1) starting at T1 = 700oK and P1 = 1.5 bar, the gas is
cooled at constant pressure to T2 = 350oK and P2 = 1.5 bar; (2)
from 350oK and 1.5 bar, the gas is compressed isothermally to
pressure P3; and (3) the gas returns to its initial state along a
path for which PT = constant. What is the thermal efficiency
of the cycle?

Example 4. Heat in the amount of 150 J is transferred
directly from a hot reservoir @ 550oK to two cold reservoirs
@ T1 = 350oK and T2 = 250oK. The surroundings
temperature is 300oK. If the heat transferred to the cold
reservoir @ T1 is half that transferred to the cold reservoir @
T2, calculate (1) the entropy generation in kJ/oK and (2) the
lost work.
