Project 1 Narrative
There are several Indiana Algebra Standards that are integrated throughout this entire
project. The main standards that are addressed in the project are quadratic equations,
functions, and problem solving. Standards involving quadratic equations are addressed during a
Camtasia Screencast video I produced. The specific standards are AI.QE.6 and AI.QE.4. These
two standards are expressed as use the process of factoring to determine zeros, lines of
symmetry, and extreme values in real-world and other mathematical problems involving
quadratic functions; interpret the results in the real-world contexts. Also, to solve quadratic
equations in one variable by inspection (e.g., for x^2 = 49), finding square roots, using the
quadratic formula, and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation (Indiana
Academic Standards Mathematics: Algebra I). The use of functions was addressed in the
interactive power point. These standards include AI.F.1, AI.F.2, AI.L.2, and AI.L.5. These
basically state that students will be able to evaluate and distinguish different functions from one
another and be able to apply them to real life settings. Lastly, the standards including problem
solving are integrated throughout every assignment given to my students. The main standard for
problem solving is PS.1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them (Indiana
Academic Standards Mathematics: Algebra I). In every assignment I created for my students,
they had to use problem solving skills in order to complete solve the questions provided.
This assignment has taught me to learn several different ways to teach my students
using technology. Throughout the semester, I had to learn to use different forms of technology
that I had never used before this year. In the beginning the class seemed to be daunting
because I have never really used technology in these ways. I had to learn to adapt to the new
technology that we were assigned to use for every project. I also have never had to create a
website before this year. Luckily, we were given the entire semester to work on the assignment.
This gave me time to ask help and do my best on the project over the semester. I now feel
confident with technology and using it in the classroom.
I believe this project could be integrated in my teaching experience as I take steps
towards becoming a teacher. As a math teacher, I plan to create videos over all the lessons I
teach. I will post them to a page similar to this where my students can access them from home if
they may be confused about a certain assignment. I will also be able to post my lesson plans for
my principal and possibly the parents of my students. I believe a website is a great teaching
resource if everyone involved takes advantage of it. The videos will provide a lot of help for the
students because I will not always be on call to help them with their questions. I hope the videos
will be another resource for the students to learn if they need extra help. I plan to have the
website accessible for anyone to use at any time.
If I had to make improvements to the project as a whole, I would make it more eye
catching and a more thorough analysis of each project. The project is not bad but the visuals
seem to be not very eye catching. They are just photos I used from the websites excluding only
a few pictures. Also, each page looks similar to the other. They are all close to looking like the
previous page. I would also have analyzed each project more and gone into more detail about
each project. I just stated the basics about the project and what I learned about each one. I
could have possibly reflected more about what I learned about each project.
