Responsibility Vs Accountability

Responsibility refers to being trusted to achieve or safeguard something, while accountability means being praised or punished based on whether responsibilities were fulfilled. You can be responsible for something without being accountable if things go wrong, but you cannot be held accountable for things you were not given responsibility for. Responsibility leads to accountability, as you can be fired for failing to meet your accountabilities but hired based on your responsibilities.

Difference between "Responsibility" and

"Accountability"

1. You are responsible for something and held accountable if it goes

wrong.
2. If you're responsible for getting something done, you're accountable.
If you're accountable, you're responsible.
3. You cannot be held accountable for anything for which you have not
been given responsibility. For example, if I am responsible for
generating 10 qualified motors a week, and only generate 9, my
boss can hold me accountable by (for example) giving the
responsibility to another person and then downgrading(9) my next
performance assessment.
Responsibility means I have been trusted to achieve something or
safeguard something.
Accountability is being praised or punished for whether or not I
perform the duty as asked.
4. One can delegate responsibility, but not accountability.
5. Responsibility leads to Accountability.
6. One you can get hired for(Responsibility) the other you can get fired
for(Accountability). (Bill Lewis)
7. You are responsible for walking my dog everday. If, anything is to
happen to him, I will hold you accountable.
8. Accountability Means answerable for your (past) action done.
9. Responsibilities are the things that roles (your position e.g. A
manager) are required to do - eg the outputs that need to be
achieved, the staff to be supervised, the reports to be written, the
meetings to be attended, as part of the role.
Accountability means to be held to accountable for achieving the
responsibilities i.e. if you do not fullfil the responsibilities of your role
you have to accept the consequences.

10. "Accountability" means that you are answerable to others for what
you do.
So we demand "accountability" of our elected officials(Govt.) -- we
expect them to answer to the voters for their decisions and behavior.
"Responsibility" means that it is on you to complete a task faithfully.
You may or may not be accountable for the tasks you are responsible
for.
For example, an employee is responsible for certain tasks in his job,
and he is accountable to his supervisor.
But a person who owns his own business is responsible for many
tasks, but he is not accountable to anyone else.
