Unit-1: Design of Machine Element-II Class Test - I MM-40

This document contains 8 questions related to machine element design. Question 1 asks to determine minimum ultimate strength values using three failure theories given fluctuating flexural stress values. Question 2 asks to discuss factors that influence the endurance limit of ductile materials. Question 3 asks to calculate the diameter of a steel rod subjected to reversed axial loading given various material properties and correction factors. It also asks to assume an endurance limit value.

CLASS TEST- I

MM-40
UNIT- 1

1. A machine component is subjected to a flexural stress which fluctuates between + 300 MN/m2 and 150
MN/m2.Determine the value of minimum ultimate strength according to 1. Gerber relation; 2. Modified
Goodman relation; and 3. Soderberg relation. Take yield strength = 0.55 Ultimate strength;
Endurance strength = 0.5 Ultimate strength; and factor of safety = 2.
2. Write a note on the influence of various factors of the endurance limit of a ductile material.
OR
3. A steel rod is subjected to a reversed axial load of 180 kN. Find the diameter of
the rod for a factor of safety of 2. Neglect column action. The material has an ultimate tensile
strength of 1070 MPa and yield strength of 910 MPa. The endurance limit in reversed bending
may be assumed to be one-half of the ultimate tensile strength. Other correction factors may be
taken as follows:
For axial loading = 0.7; For machined surface = 0.8 ; For size = 0.85 ; For stress
concentration = 1.0.

4. Illustrate how the stress concentration in a component can be reduced.

UNIT-3
5. A helical spring is made from a wire of 6 mm diameter and has outside diameter
of 75 mm. If the permissible shear stress is 350 MPa and modulus of rigidity 84 kN/mm2, find the
axial load which the spring can carry and the deflection per active turn.
6. Explain one method of avoiding the tendency of a compression spring to buckle.
OR
7. A cast iron pulley transmits 20 kW at 300 r.p.m. The diameter of pulley is 550 mm and has four straight arms
of elliptical cross-section in which the major axis is twice the minor axis. Find the dimensions of the arm if the
allowable bending stress is 15 MPa. Mention the plane in which the major axis of the arm should lie.
8. A helical torsion spring of mean diameter 60 mm is made of a round wire of 6 mm diameter. If a torque of 6
N-m is applied on the spring, find the bending stress induced and the angular deflection of the spring in degrees.
The spring index is 10 and modulus of elasticity for the spring material is 200 kN/mm2. The number of effective
turns may be taken as 5.5.
