Lesson Overview/Summary*: This lesson is combined with the music lesson from the day before. Yesterday the students

environment (Gives us oxygen to breath, turns garbage into its food so that waste is reduced, ect.) After they are finished
with the project students will come together as a group and share what they have created.

1. Visual Art: The students will be able to explore the use of tools and materials by working safely in the classroom to design their own tissue paper artwork.
2. Literacy: The students will be able to learn about different styles of art from the painting in The Lorax as well as hear about what taking from our
environment could do to the animals that live their. Students will also write a summary about their new plant creation.
3. Science: The students will be able to observe and investigate the different parts of a flower by completing the worksheet activities and creating a plant of
their own.

Science: discuss the different parts of a plant
Today we are going to be talking about plants again. Did everyone remember
to water their seeds that we planted yesterday? Good! Today we are going to
be talking about the different parts of a plant and then creating our own

Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very specific):

1. Read Dr. Seusss The Lorax
2. Talk about the plants in the book and what is happening to the
environment after they were chopped down. (Questions about our plants in
our environment and what their purposes are)
3. Talk about how the plants in Dr. Seusss books look different than the
ones we see outside. Artist create images such as the trees in the book that
serve different purposes than their original purpose. What were the trees in
the book used for?
4. Start project by discussing what plants do to help the environment. Tell
students that they will now create their own plants and make a short
summary of what function the plant does to help the environment.
5. Have art supplies ready including tissue paper, pipe cleaners, ect. for the
students
6. Start by showing students your finished flower and talking about what its
function is
7. Once they are working on their plants start the movie, The Lorax (If school
allows students to watch movies)
8. Give students time after they are finished with their plant to write a
summary about it
9. Bring students into a group
10. Once done with sharing time, talk to students again about the different
parts of a plant and what they need to grow
11. Finish class by going over the song they learned the day before( song can
also be used as transition from spot to spot)
Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set): Everyones new plant creations were
amazing! I loved the ideas that you all came up with to help the
environment. Plants play a very important role in the world by letting off
oxygen for us to breath and it would be so great if your plants could be used
to help the world as well.

This lesson has students think of different ways of solving environmental problems and helping the earth. Unlike the plants we have that give off oxygen, the
new creations of plants each student makes will have a different function that the child designs to help the world.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
Students will reflect on their learning once they start to tell the class about their project. There will be a pre made worksheet for students to fill out about
their flowers name, job in the environment, and what it needs to grow.
How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students?
Challenged learners will be paired with a buddy to help with the worksheets as well as work on the project

What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
No revision is needed for this project. However each students flower turns out is beautiful and unique to their personality. I feel that giving time to change
their ideas would lead to more students changing to have similar ideas as their peers.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
Students will be able to share their learning experience and their plant creation after everyone is finished. This will be set up like a show and tell time where
everyone will sit in a circle on the carpet and one at a time stand up to share their plant creation and what it does to help the environment.
