Reflections from the lesson

This lesson when very well. The students were really able to self-reflect on their own traditions and
hopes for this coming holiday season, as well as step outside of their own lives to think of others. The
most powerful moment of the lesson was when I posed the question, Where does Christmas come
from? I paused to let the students think for a moment, and then I had one rather shy student raise
her hand and say, Christmas doesnt come from stores or presents, it comes from love. The entire
class was quiet, and the theme of the lesson really hit home for the students.
I think the lesson worked very well, and could have gone in so many different directions that we only
briefly touched on. We talked about being ethical citizens, and giving whatever we could. Some of the
students mentioned that they dont have the money to give to things like Operation Christmas Child
or to the Food Bank, but were able to realize that they could give in other ways, with their time and
talents. This giving is easy to start in the home, but is just as important to spread to the school and
local community.
