Interview Project: Part 1
Background Information
My Interviewee:
I have chosen to interview Arleen Barrell, a working family nurse practitioner, at Primary
Childrens Hospitals Emergency Department and Rapid Treatment Unit. Our interview is set for
September 24, 2014. We will be meeting in the board meeting room adjacent to the emergency
department. I chose Arleen because she is a professional woman who is approachable and always
willing to teach others. She makes the extra effort to explain the why of particular
interventions she may request when we work together. There are many rotating nurse
practitioners that work in the emergency department. I work with Arleen roughly once a month. I
am always been impressed with her medical knowledge and her bedside manner. I am looking
forward to spending time getting to better understand what she does and what motivates her.
Career Research:
I am presently an associate of applied science, registered nurse. This is an associate level
degree. I will need to complete a bachelor of science in nursing before moving on to higher-level
education. There are several master level nursing degrees available depending on the desired
career path. For example, a master of science in nursing degree, is a entry level degree for nurse
educators and managers or administrators. It is also used as a prerequisite for doctorate-level
nursing education such as advanced practice registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, nurse
anesthetist, nurse midwife or doctor of nursing practice. Im told that a family nurse practitioner
is more marketable for those wanting to remain in a clinical setting. I enjoy people. I enjoy the
time I spend at the bedside. I want to continue to be directly involved in patient care.
Financially nurse practitioners make anywhere from $60,000 to greater than $82,000 a
year depending on where their employer. For example, specialty hospitals average higher
salaries than generalized doctors offices.
