Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO
SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation,
documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood
professionals. They a) know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment.
They b) know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective
assessment strategies c) in a responsible way, d) in partnership with families and other
professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. (NAEYC 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

In my ECED 100 Introduction to Early Childhood Education class for fall semester of 2014, I
made a parental involvement poster. This poster shows three benefits/pro for the children, parent
and the teacher when there is parental involvement. It gives you a good breakdown of why is it
beneficial to be a part of your childs education.

Analysis of What I Learned:

I learned that there are so many ways that a parent can get involved. By doing this, it is a huge
impact on the child as well as the teacher. Some of the benefits are that children are more likely
to have better selfesteem and make better grades, as well as the parent having a better
understanding of the teachers job. Creating a change and getting involved is the best way for
everyone to grow in a positive way.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

By designing a parental involvement poster I have illustrated the partnership with families and
other professionals to positively influence the development of every child. It demonstrated more
ways to improve the way people are involved, and knowing what is out in the community to help
the family.
