Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a measure of pollution in water that cannot be broken down biologically. The COD test determines the amount of oxygen required to chemically oxidize contaminants in water over 2 hours using potassium dichromate. A higher COD indicates a higher level of pollution. COD has advantages over biological oxygen demand (BOD) as results are available sooner (2 hours vs. 5 days for BOD), it requires less sample manipulation, oxidizes a wider range of compounds, and can be more easily standardized.

QUESTIONS:
1. Define and explain the Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
Chemical oxygen demand is the standard method for indirect measurement of the amount of pollution (that cannot be oxidized biologically) in a sample of water. The chemical oxygen demand test procedure is based on the chemical decomposition of organic and inorganic contaminants, dissolved or suspended in water. The result of a chemical oxygen demand test indicates the amount of water-dissolved oxygen (expressed as part per million or milligrams per liter of water) consumed by the contaminants, during two hours of decomposition from a solution of boiling potassium dichromate. The higher the chemical oxygen demand, the higher the amount of pollution in the test sample. For the contaminants that can be oxidized biologically, the biological oxygen demand (BOD) method is used.
2. State the advantages of COD over BOD
The advantages of the COD test as compared to the BOD test are: 1) COD results are available much sooner that is within 2 hours only compare to BOD (5 days) 2) The COD test requires fewer manipulations of the sample. 3) The COD test oxidizes a wider range of chemical compounds. 4) It can be standardized more easily.
