2014-11-20 Science - Topic D - Insulation

This lesson plan is for a grade 2 science class about polar bear insulation. The lesson will last 60 minutes. Students will learn that polar bears have thick fur and blubber that insulate them from cold temperatures. They will watch a video demonstrating how blubber keeps hands warm in cold water. Students will then do a hands-on experiment comparing the insulation of bare hands versus hands wearing a "blubber glove" in cold water. After the experiment, students will complete a worksheet and discuss other animal and human insulators. The teacher will observe students and assess their understanding through questions, worksheets, and class participation.

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

2-9 Recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating and
cooling.
9- Identify materials that insulate animals from the cold; wool, fur and
feathers; and identify materials that are used by humans for the same
purpose.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Identify the materials that keep polar bears and other animals warm
2. Identify what materials keep them warm
3. Be introduced to the term insulation

Learning Activity
#1

Read the polar bear book to students

Before book, ask if students know where polar bears live.
Before book, ask students to think of what would keep a polar
bear warm.
Ask: What do they do to keep warm.
Continue with questioning throughout the book.
Make observations about the picture (covering nose, etc.)

Are students listening / answering questions? Does it look like

they are following along? Are they answering questions?

Learning Activity
#2

Introduce video and tell them that they will be doing the same
experiment after the video.
Once video is over explain the rules and expectations of the
experiement.
Dont dip glove too deep
Wait your turn, everyone gets a chance.
Explain how to do the worksheet. They will all complete
handout once everyone has completed their turn with the polar
bear glove.
Make sure students are paying attention to video. Ask them
questions about the video after.
Ask: why couldnt Carmelo keep his hand in the water for very
long at the beginning?
Why could Carmelo keep his hand in the water later in the
video?
What did Carmelo use so he could keep his hand in the water.
Break the class into two groups, half will work with one tub, the
other half will work with the other tub. Have each student try
the experiment.
Put one hand in the cold water and one hand in the blubber.
Ask if they can feel the difference between the glove and no
glove. Tell them the fat is an insulator keeping them warm.
Once the students have completed experiment, give them the
handout to work on.
Help as needed.
Ask if students know why that fat is helping them stay warm.
Fat is an insulator that keep heat in.
Students will provide evidence of learning by handing in their
handout.
Closure
Bring class back together and ask them what does an insulator
do
Ask them to list as many insulators as they can think of
