Cae Assignment 2

This document provides instructions for 4 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) assignments involving finite difference methods. The assignments involve: 1) Deriving a finite differencing equation for convection at a boundary node. 2) Using finite differences to determine temperatures at indicated points in a 2D solid with given boundary conditions. 3) Using finite volume methods to determine temperatures at nodes with given boundary conditions in another geometry. 4) Using an explicit technique to calculate temperatures over time at nodes in a concrete wall exposed to fire, with radiation and convection boundary conditions. Sample calculations and temperature curves over time are to be provided.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assignment 2
1. By using energy balance method, derive the finite differencing volume equation given
below for the boundary surface node with convection (shown below):

2. Consider steady two-dimensional heat transfer in a long solid body cross section is given
in the figure below. The measured temperatures at selected points are as shown. The
thermal conductivity is k=45 W/m.K, and there is no heat generation. Using finite
difference method with a mesh size x = y = 2 com, determine the temperature at the
indicated points in the medium. You may take advantage of the symmetry.

3.

Use finite difference volume method to obtain the temperature at nodes 6, 7, 10,
and 11 and assume the following boundary conditions also shown in below figure.
Node 1-4 T= 100C, Node 8, 12, 16 T = 20C, Node 13-16 T= 50C, Node 5 and 9
Q= 5kW/m2 directly heating the nodes.

4.

The concrete wall shown below is exposed to fire. Fire temperature at each time step is
given in the attached spreadsheet. On the other side of the wall the air temperature (T)
is 20C. Using the Explicit technique, calculate the temperature at each node shown in
the concrete wall. The initial temperature at the first second is given in the attached
spread sheet as well as the fire temperature at each time step. Assume that heat is
transferred from the fire to Node 0 is by radiation only and from node 6 to ambient by
convection only. However (to simplify the solution) you need to assume that the ambient
air temperature remains unchanged.
Use the attached spread sheet to do your calculation. When you write your answer for this
assignment give a sample calculation for two time steps only and detail the equations you
have used. Also plot the curves which show the temperature variation for each node
versus time and paste the curves in your answer report.
