Vibration Assignment 1

This document contains the details of Assignment 1 for the MCB3103 Vibrations course in May 2013. It includes 4 questions - the first asks to find the equivalent mass and spring constant of a rocker arm assembly, the second asks to determine the equivalent damping constant of a damped bar system, the third asks to predict amplitudes and frequencies from a combined motion graph, and the fourth asks to derive expressions and find amplitudes for the velocity, acceleration and displacement of a machine given its displacement function.

MCB3103 VIBRATIONS

May 2013 Semester

Assignment 1

1. Find the equivalent mass and spring constant of the rocker arm assembly shown in Fig. A1.1
with respect to x-coordinate.

Figure A-1.1

2. A massless bar of length 1 m is pivoted at one end and subjected to a force at the other
end. Two translational dampers, with damping constants c1 = 12 N-s/m and c2 = 16 N-s/m
are connected to the bar as shown in Fig. A1.2. Determine the equivalent damping
constant, ceq, of the system so that the force F at point A can be expressed as F = ceq v,
where v is the linear velocity of point A.

3. A machine is subjected to two harmonic motions, and the resultant motion, as displayed by
an oscilloscope, is shown in Fig. A1.3. Predict the amplitudes and frequencies of the two
motions.

4. If the displacement of a machine is described as x(t) = sin 5t + 4 cos 5t, where x is in

centimeters and t is in seconds, find the expressions for the velocity and acceleration of the
machine. Also find the amplitudes of displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the
machine.
