Lessonplan Edu5170

1) The lesson plan aims to teach students about the equation of a straight line (y=mx+b) by having them identify the slope (m) and y-intercept (b) from graphs. 2) Students will learn key definitions, explore online graphing tools, and play an algebra game to reinforce concepts. 3) Assessment includes a mini-quiz where students write equations for lines given graphs.

Lesson Plan
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.B.5
Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph.
Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For
example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which
of two moving objects has greater speed.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.B.6
Use similar triangles to explain why the slope m is the same between any two distinct
points on a non-vertical line in the coordinate plane; derive the equation y = mx for a line
through the origin and the equation y = mx + b for a line intercepting the vertical axis at
b.
ISTE NETS for Students Standards:
I.
Research and information fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate,
and use information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information
from a variety of sources and media
c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the
appropriateness to specific tasks
d. Process data and report results
II.
Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making:
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects,
solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and
resources.
a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for
investigation
b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project
c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions
d. Use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternative solutions

Lesson Objectives:
Students will gain an understanding of the equation of a straight line, y=mx+b
Students will be able to identify the y-intercept and slope from the equation y=mx+b by
looking at series of graphs.
Students will utilize technology by playing with an online graph, using an online
graphing calculator and by playing an online game.

Introduce the Learning Activity:

I will remind students of our previous lesson of learning how to find the slope and the yintercept of a line. They will be provided with a handout of definitions.
The students will be provided verbally with the equation of a straight line, y=mx+b.
Students will then learn how the slope and y-intercept will be incorporated into the
formula for the equation of a straight line. They will be able to identify from the formula
that the m represents the slope and the b represent the y-intercept.
Students will then be able to look at graph and form the equation of a straight line.
The students will then be provided with a key definitions handout as well as a handout for
a visual representation.
Students will be motivated during this lesson because we will be using technology and
playing an online game.

Provide Information:
The students will be given a formal and informal definition as well a handout to display
graphs and how the equation is used.
The teacher will provide three examples on the board. Two of the three graphs will be
drawn on the board to show students how to find the y-intercept and the slope. The third
graph will be a graph of a horizontal line to show that the equation will not have a slope
and will only have a y-intercept.
The examples that will be provided will be the graphs of y=2x+1, y=3x, and y=5
Students will then be asked to go to my resources page and click on the link that says
explore the straight-line graph, where they will then be able to test out different slope and
y-intercept values.
Provide Examples:
Now it is time for the students try this on their own. They will be given a worksheet with
3 examples of graphs and they will need to find the slope and the y-intercept of each
graph in order to create an equation for a straight line. They will be given the graphs of
y=3x+4, y=2x-4, and y=3. Students will then be asked to go to my resources page and
click the online calculator to check the answers to the examples. Students may work in
groups to complete this task.
Next students will be asked to go to my resources page and click on the link that says
algebra vs. the cockroaches. Students will then work independently on this game to grasp
a better understanding of y-intercept and slope.
If time allows students will work in groups to start on the homework assignment for that
night.

Provide Knowledge of Results:

Verbal feedback will be given when answering the examples provided on the board in the
beginning of class.
When working in groups, the teaching will walk around the room to give verbal guidance
and assistance if help is needed.
While students are working independently on the game, the teacher will walk around and
evaluate the students progress. Verbal guidance will be given if needed.
If there seems to be confusion on a certain topic, the teacher will provide another
example on the board asking the class for help in solving the problem.
The students will be given a homework assignment for that night which will be handed in
the next day. The assignments will be graded and written feedback will be provided on
the assignment.
Review the Activity:
The class will be asked to provide the teacher with a short recap of the lesson presented
in class.
Method of assessment:
The next day students will be given a mini-quiz based on the lesson presented the day
before. They will then be graded on their work to see whether or not the students learned
the task that was presented to them.
Mini-Quiz Example:
They will be presented with the graphs of the equations:
1. y=5x+2
2. y=1
3. y=3x+9
4. y=2x
They will be asked to form the equation of a straight line by looking at the graphs.
