To Whom It May Concern:
This is the easiest letter of recommendation Ive ever been asked to write.
Without a doubt and without reservation Mary Steinert is the most exceptional and outstanding student Ive
had the pleasure of teaching. I put that word in quotes as Ive learned from her more than any previous
student, and I wonder whether the student/teacher binary has disappeared between us. She asks me questions
I frequently have trouble answering, and for that I owe her a debt of gratitude. Her assignments have been
kept for use as examples for future students, though I will not expect them to reach so high a bar.
When I observed her student teaching I took notes on ways to improve my own classroom practices. Shes
that good. How good? She was offered a job twice during her internship.
As you are no doubt aware from reading her resume and looking at her transcripts, she has a host of
accomplishments that she can be proud of. She played basketball while student teaching and coaching
basketball at her placement. She has a history of volunteerism that simply outshines her peers. Team player
is an admittedly over-used phrase, but in a school setting one cant underscore its importance. Yes Mrs.
Steinert is a team player, but she is equally comfortable playing the role of leader.
What is wonderful about Mrs. Steinert is that she would deny all of the above. She is humble and gracious
and is not one to take compliments. In fact, if I had a complaint about her it is that she doubts her intellectual
capacities and her pedagogical skill set too much. However, I suspect that will change as she matures and
earns both her M.A. and Ph.D. Granted, she does not know what she will study while earning either, but I
have spoken to another of her professors and we are agreed that Mrs. Steinert will go on for further study.
She is too intelligent not to.
If you have any doubt about Mrs. Steinerts intellectual capacities, any doubt about her personal integrity,
any doubt about her potential as teacher, scholar and engaged community member, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Sincerely,
