Thanks to Mayor Jim Finucane for helping us with the count and for sharing his personal experiences of

engaging questions.
After school activities will begin the first week after mid-term (week of Nov 3rd).

Gail Kelly and her mother, for children from 2nd-6th class, on Tuesdays, from 2:30 to 3:30. Thanks to

Speech and Drama Classes

well and will continue after the midterm for 3rd - 6th class. The sessions will be held on Thursdays in Collis
Sandes House.
Science Week
On Nov 13th, 5th and 6th class will visit the Air-Mazing Rocket Show which IT Tralee is hosting as part of
Science Week. Weather permitting, the children will walk to and from school to the IT College.
Parent/teacher meetings are scheduled for the week of Nov. 24th. Meetings will be 10 minutes long and
will be held after school. You will get a meeting date and time after the midterm break. Parent teacher
meetings provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to work together to strengthen the home-school
partnership and thereby support the children's learning. We are looking forward to meeting you all that
week.
Fundraising Bag Pack
Mark Dec. 22nd in your diaries! We are in the fortunate position of having secured a bag pack date at Tesco,
Manor, for Dec. 22nd. This is a great opportunity for us to do some substantial fundraising, as it is one of
the busiest shopping days of the year. Parent involvement is crucial to the success of this fundraiser - we are
appealing to you to volunteer time on the day.

The Book Fair will be held from Nov. 13th to 18th. This is a great opportunity to purchase children's books
and help fundraise for the school at the same time.
Christmas Cards
In early Nov. children will design their own cards based on Listowel Printing Works templates. You can
order cards during Nov. and they will be ready in early December.
Irish Clothing Collections
On Tuesday, the 18th November, Irish Clothing Collections will collect any unwanted clothes, shoes,
bedding, old mobile phones, etc. This is a chance to clear out your cupboards and also raise funds for the
school. A reminder text will be sent out.

Importance of Reading at Home
Parents are critical partners in helping children learn to read. Parents are sometimes unsure of how to
encourage reading at home or how to make it fun and interesting. Reading at home with your child is
important in helping your child develop the skills necessary to become a successful reader, and it can also
build relationships at the same time. Sitting close together and snuggling over a good book sends the
message to your child that he or she is important to you and that you value time together. Sharing ideas
about the story shows that you value your childs ideas and feelings. By making reading time special, your
child will see reading as an experience he or she doesnt want to miss.
When reading together, it is fun to discuss the story and ask questions about the book. Remember to give
kids plenty of time to respond to questions.
The most effective way children learn is by watching parents and adults in their lives. Children need to see
you reading for a number of purposes: enjoyment, recipes, directions, to answer questions, etc. The same is
true for writing. Be sure to talk about what you are doing, Lets read the directions to figure out how this
works. I will write this down, so that I dont forget how to do it. Seeing adults who are important to them
read and write speaks much louder than words.
Even when children know how to read they may still enjoy reading aloud with parents. When you read
aloud you can read books at your childs listening level which is higher than their reading level. You model
what good reading sounds like and expand your childs vocabulary. It gives you a chance to talk about more
complicated stories and ideas. You can read about things that your child may not choose to read on his or
her own. When reading aloud together, you also give your child the attention from you that is so important.
Go raibh maith agaibh!
