Problemario 2

This document contains 5 practice problems related to mechanics of materials. Problem 1 involves determining the required diameter of a connecting rod and the shear stress in a pin. Problem 2 calculates the maximum force that can be applied to a foot pedal given allowable stresses. Problem 3 asks how many rivets are required to fasten angle sections to a gusset plate. Problem 4 involves calculating a safety factor for a link supporting a load. Problem 5 concerns determining the minimum diameter of cylindrical rods supporting a load given a stress limit.

Problem 1. The bell crank, which is in equilibrium under the forces shown in the figure, is
supported by a 20 mm diameter pin at D that is in double shear. Determine (a) the required
diameter of the connecting rod AB, given that its tensile allowable stress is 100 MPa. (b) The
shear stress in the pin.

Problem 2. Compute the maximum force P that can be applied to the foot pedal. The 6 mm
diameter pin at B is in single shear, and its allowable shear stress is 28 MPa. The cable
attached at C has a diameter of 3 mm and a allowable normal stress of 140 MPa.

Problem 3. The figure shows a roof truss and the detail of the connection at joint B. Members
BC and BE are angle sections with the thicknesses shown in the figure. The allowable stresses
are 70 MPa for shear in the rivets and 140 MPa for bearing stress due to the rivets. How many
19 mm diameter rivets are required to fasten the following members to the gusset plate : (a)
BC; and (b) BE?

Problem 4. Link BC is 6 mm thick, has a width w = 25 mm, and is made of a steel with a
480 MPa yield stress in tension. What is the safety factor used if the structure shown was
designed to support a 16 kN load P?

Problem 5. Two solid cylindrical rods support a load of P = 70 kN, as shown in the figure.
If the normal stress in each rod must be limited to 165 MPa, determine the minimum diameter
D required for each rod.
