Philosophy of Teaching
My name is JeLisa Ashby. I am a senior, elementary education major from Charlotte,
North Carolina. I chose to pursue a degree in education because it is an art, a craft if you will, that some do not understand the importance of. Teachers have the intimidating task of capturing, influencing, guiding, and informing a classroom-full of inquiring minds. I find this task exhilarating. Teaching forces one to have a certain poise about themselves while remaining personable. I not only want my students to become high achieving intellectuals, but first, I want them to become the best people that they can be. In my classroom I will infuse the importance of treating one another fairly and with respect, as adults must do day-in and day-out. My intent is for manners and morals to be second nature to my students, molding them into ideal beings of our cultural society, while having the intelligence to coexist as individuals. One of my favorite quotes, as pertaining to education is, Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. This quote by William Butler Yeats, describes my ideal teaching style because I have witnessed how mere inquisition, when harnessed to its potential, will inspire a child on so many different echelons. AS an educator is it my responsibility to gather and present information of the curriculum in a way that captures the minds of all students in the classroom. If a child is captivated and engaged in learning, there is a direct correlation to fewer behavior issues and higher comprehension levels all while simultaneously improving social-skills. Teaching is a profession that requires constant and tactical reevaluation. It is a field in which it is best to lead by example. Not only will I encourage a Socratic learning environment, I will nourish the childs need for growth as an individual.
