Density Is

Density is a property that compares the mass and volume of an object. It can be used to determine if one material is heavier than another of the same volume. Density is calculated as mass divided by volume, and has units of kg/m3 or g/cm3. A material with a higher density than another will sink if the materials are mixed together.

Density

Density is a characteristic of a material. If same the volume of lead and water is compared, lead has _ _ _ _ _
_ mass than water. In other words lead is __ _ _ _ _ _ __ than water. Therefore to compare the heaviness
of two materials, the same volume should be considered. Density of a material gives the above information
Density is _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _.

Eg: water has a density of __ _ _ _ _ _ .

Units of density are kg/m3 and g/cm3

When the mass is measured in _ _ _ _ and the volume is measured in _ _ _ the unit of density is
kg/m3
When the mass is measured in g and the volume is measured in cm3 the unit of density is _ _ _ _
Using your knowledge of units, find the relationship between kg/m3 and g/cm3.

Ex: A volume of 100ml of a liquid has a mass of 200g. Find the density of the liquid.

Ex: a side of a cube is 2m. If it has a mass of 19200kg find the density of the material its made out of.

If two materials are mixed together the material with a low density will float on the other material.
Eg: If a ball made out of lead falls in to a container of water it will sink mainly because lead has a
higher density than water.
Eg: an air bubble trapped in ware will always move up because air is less dense than water.
Eg: if oil and water are mixed together oil mill float on water because oil has a low density than water.

Use the above table to refer the density of different materials.

Ex:
1. Steel has a density of 7.8g/cm3. If a block of steel has a volume of 6cm3, find its mass.
2. Aluminium has a density of 2700kg/m3.
What is the density in g/cm3
What is the mass of 20cm3 of aluminium?
What is the volume of 27g of aluminium
3. What is the volume of a storage tank which will hold 3200kg?
4. What material of mass 4500kg has a volume of 6m3
