MEL 472 Automotive Engineering IIT Ropar: Question1. Calculate Radius of Rotation and Analyze Your Results

This document contains an assignment for an automotive engineering course. It includes 5 questions related to calculating the radius of rotation for a truck with different wheelbases when the front steer angle is 30 degrees. It also includes questions about the required space for a maneuver, relating the kinematic steer angle of a rear-wheel drive vehicle to the angular velocities of the inner and outer drive wheels, and relating the kinematic steer angle of a vehicle with unequal front and rear tracks to other parameters. The final question asks to calculate the angular velocity ratio of the outer and inner drive wheels as a function of steer angle for a specific two-axle vehicle.

Assignment-6
Instructor: Dr. R K Maurya,

Semester I

2014-2015

Submission Date:
Question1. Calculate Radius of rotation and analyze your results.
Consider a two-axle truck that is offered in different wheelbases.
l= 109 in; l= 132.5in; l= 150.0in; l= 176.0 in; If the front track of the vehicles is w=70 in and a1=a2, calculate
the radius of rotations for =30deg.
Question2. Required space.

Question 3. Consider a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with front steerable wheels as shown in Figure 1. Assume that
the front and rear tracks of the vehicle are equal and the drive wheels are turning without slip. If the angular
velocities of the inner and outer drive wheels by wi and wo, respectively, the show that the kinematic steer
angles of the front wheels can be expressed by

Figure 1.

Question 4. Consider the vehicle with unequal front and rear tracks as shown in figure2. Show that the
kinematic steer angles of the front wheels can be expressed by

Figure 2

Question5. Wheel angular velocity.

Consider a two-axle vehicle with l=2=7m w=1=36 m.
What is the angular velocity ratio of wo/wi as a function of the steer angle ?
