Transformations

The document discusses different types of geometric transformations including translations, reflections, and rotations. A transformation moves or manipulates the shape of an object in some way. For example, a translation moves every point of a shape the same distance in the same direction, a reflection creates a mirror image of a shape across a mirror line, and a rotation turns a shape around a fixed center point. Examples and interactive links are provided to demonstrate each type of transformation.

TRANSFORMATIONS

THAO NGUYEN

TEKS
The third grade students use their mastery of
Transformation, and how they move objects
around the coordinate plane.
Predict and describe the results of sliding,
flipping, and turning two-dimensional shapes.
Describes a motion or a series of motions that
will show that two shapes are congruent.

What is Transformation?
A transformation is a general term for four specific
ways to manipulate the shape of a point, a line, or

shape. The original shape of the object is called the

pre-image and the final shape and position of the
object is the image under the transformation.

Changing the shape using: turn, flip, slide, resize

What is Translation?
A Translation is a motion (or transformation) of
a plane that moves every point of the plane a
specified distance in a specified direction along a
straight line.

Example of a Translation
Every point of the shape
must move:
- the same distance
in the same direction.

What is Reflection?
Every point is the same distance form the central
line and the same size as the original image. The
central line is called the Mirror Line.

What is Rotation?
A Rotation is a transformation of the plane
determined by holding one point- the centerfixed and rotating the plane about this point by a
certain amount in a certain direction ( a certain
number of degrees either clockwise or
counterclockwise)

Example of a rotation
Rotation: means turning around a center
